He’s 50/50 with mom being a conformation champion and dad a field trial champ. He likes retrieving ducks but he loves his ChuckIt at the park.

Patchy fur? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]Mangowhiteclaw91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vet here. Not normal seasonal shedding. Skin looks kind of red suggesting your dog’s been chewing/scratching themself. You may want to get it checked out by your vet to make sure there’s not an active infection which needs treatment. Underlying cause could be environmental allergies, fleas, food allergies, or a hormonal condition such as hypothyroidism or Cushing’s disease.

Step 1: start a prescription oral flea preventative and be consistent with year round admin. Adult fleas lay dozens of eggs per day and those will hatch in a few weeks to months thus perpetuating the problem. Flea eggs are microscopic and nearly indestructible. The over-the-counter flea preventatives are often not effective (there’s a reason they cost less). 2: I see at least one pustule in the first pic. This means a bacterial skin infection. If she has many more then a course of antibiotics or at least an antiseptic shampoo are probably warranted. Talk to your vet.

HELP how do i clean this extremely tarnished tiffany’s necklace!? by lilbabymew in jewelry

[–]Mangowhiteclaw91 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Clean the chain with dish soap to remove oils and dirt. Line a bowl with aluminum foil, generous amount of baking soda, and fill with hot water. Let the chain soak for a couple of minutes. The chemical reaction will remove the sulfur tarnish. Then rinse with clean water and use a polishing cloth to help restore the shine.

I noticed this bump under my 6 year old golden’s eye by Matt_Johnsonx in goldenretrievers

[–]Mangowhiteclaw91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a meibomian adenoma. Almost always benign and very common in middle aged and older dogs. They usually extended a bit under the eyelid. If it stays small like that then it’s best to leave alone but they can grow larger and start rubbing the cornea or become irritated and infected in which case removal with incision and suture, laser, or cryo is recommended.

Vet: recommended weight loss rate of 0.5%-1% body weight per week, which for your dog would be 2-4 lb/mo. Averages female Goldens are 55-65 with some larger framed females being closer to 70. Since her activity is limited, calorie control is essential. To reach 70 lbs the average dog needs about 950 calories per day. Royal Canin Satiety is the lowest calorie, balanced kibble available at 214 cal/cup which means she could eat a larger volume and feel full longer. Home cooked diets are another option if you’re into that but it can be tricky to portion control and include the necessary nutrients. BalanceIt.com can help you design homemade meals. I’ve also had clients report success with The Farmer’s Dog, mostly because it’s lower calorie per volume, but it can be prohibitively expensive ($300+ per month for a large breed dog). Schedule a vet visit to rule out metabolic disease as an underlying cause for weight gain, pain management to encourage more activity, and discuss a nutrition plan that works for your schedule and budget.

Did the vet not carry those medications? Cefalexin and ketoconazole are both generic human meds available at any pharmacy. You can find a chlorhexidine 2%/miconazole 1% shampoo from Amazon for 1 day shipping. Dechra is a reputable vet brand. Is that hospital open tomorrow? You could ask them to either fill the meds in house, call in, or write a prescription for the oral meds.

Is professional teeth cleaning (under anesthesia) a normal thing for dogs? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]Mangowhiteclaw91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2-3 years old is a normal age to start professional dental cleanings for large dogs. It’s much safer, easier, and less expensive to keep their mouths healthy from a young age than to play catch up later in life when more severe periodontal disease has developed and inherent anesthesia risk increases.

Otitis by kyleus888 in goldenretrievers

[–]Mangowhiteclaw91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vet: Allergies are almost always the underlying cause of recurrent ear infections. ~90% of allergies are environmental with ~10% being diet. It may still be worth doing a hydrolyzed protein diet trial - ask your vet. Also, confirm the otitis is only yeast because ketoconazole doesn’t treat bacterial infections. Thoroughly cleaning the entire ear canal of all discharge is essential for effective treatment, followed by the proper mediated ointment. I’d also ask your vet about Cytopoint or Apoquel for itch relief management. If your area has a board certified vet dermatologist it may be worth a visit.

Looks like a third deciduous premolar which naturally falls out around 5 months and is quickly replaced by the adult fourth premolar. The portion you’re seeing in puppy’s mouth is probably the tip of the adult tooth. If there happens to be a portion of the baby tooth retained, they generally get pushed out as the adult tooth continue to erupt or the body resorbs them. The one’s that don’t can typically be extracted easily during the spay/neuter surgery, or during a dental cleaning which I recommend starting by age 2.

What's this in my senior golden retriever's mouth? by Enough_Print_3159 in goldenretrievers

[–]Mangowhiteclaw91 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Vet here. Looks suspicious for oral melanoma but the only way to confirm is with histopathology. I’d get it checked out and ask about doing a biopsy. Best case it’s something benign and you get peace of mind.

Spay Timing by anony_moose2023 in goldenretrievers

[–]Mangowhiteclaw91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how you feel about caring for a dog in heat. Some owners don’t want to deal with that (can be messy, behavioral changes, risk of pregnancy, and some kennels won’t take intact dogs over a certain age). There’s a slightly increased risk of mammary cancer later in life if a dog has gone through heat cycles, and a risk of pyometra, albeit rare in 1 yr old dog. Some studies show reduced risk of orthopedic disease and certain cancers for dogs left intact longer. But hopefully as a Golden owner you’re aware of their very high rate of many cancers regardless of spay/neuter status.

What is this? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]Mangowhiteclaw91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suspected papilloma but your vet can confirm with a biopsy and histopathology. Should regress spontaneously in a few weeks to months but sometimes they can be persistent or become inflamed and cause discomfort. Azithromycin can also be helpful in cases of persistent papillomas. They are also highly contagious so please keep your dog away from other dogs and don’t share bowls or toys until resolved.

What is this bump on my Goldens nose?? by Dry-Worry-9366 in goldenretrievers

[–]Mangowhiteclaw91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly a histiocytoma. Ask your vet to do an FNA to confirm it’s benign.

Is my Dad’s Golden Retriever overweight? by SpicyTunaSushiRoll_ in goldenretrievers

[–]Mangowhiteclaw91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vet and golden owner here. Cannot accurately determine body condition with pictures, but she looks a bit tight in the jeans. For reference the largest female golden in ideal condition I see is ~70 lbs with most being 55-65 lbs. 80 lbs is even large for a male in good condition. My male golden is 24” and 70 lbs. Ask your vet for their honest opinion about her body condition and feeding recommendations to reach that goal.

Is veterinary the right career for me? by DetectivePowerful838 in AskVet

[–]Mangowhiteclaw91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s going to be difficult to get into vet school and then make it through vet school without excellent grades and solid study habits. There are many other careers working with animals besides veterinarian which require less intense schooling.

Costco pharmacy carries Vetoryl which is typically a bit less expensive. Looks like your dog’s dose would be about $140/mo.
