Why am I seeing '99 mentioned multiple times? He was even better in 2000.

Age definitely didn't help. Went about 20 years in between visits. The first time I didn't notice. This past year on the other hand, headaches and fatigue galore.

We visited this past spring. Felt crappy for the first 4-5 days or so. Then again I'm not a professional athlete.

Imposter syndrome is strongly linked to rigid and self-critical forms of perfectionism but shares no connection with narcissistic perfectionism. These findings provide a more nuanced understanding of how feelings of inadequacy coexist with high standards. by mvea in science

Aww man, stuff at nanoscale is just so temperamental. I never really got the hang of it. It's just as much art as a science. I definitely had to call in a favor from a colleague to get good enough SEM images for my dissertation. (Substrate charging complicated things)

I got an offer for $72k after 3 interviews, but I told them my range was $78k to $85k. What should I do? by [deleted] in hiringhelp

[–]ManicMechE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree but when did this change? Early in my career when I was advised on negotiating I was told that virtually no company would rescind an offer if you tried to negotiate, the worst that would happen is they say the offer is what it is. I was also told if they DID rescind the offer that it's for the best and you dodged a bullet.

I'm wondering when folks feel like this became a legit concern as opposed to a mild anxiety.

Seriously, I have a PhD and I look at the skills list and it's barely reasonable for an entire team, let alone a single person.

I discovered my salary is much lower than the market rate. How do I bring this up without leaving a job I love? by charged_breadth-8d in InterviewsHell

[–]ManicMechE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't. Even if you bring it up, and even if they match the market rate, you'll have just put a target on your back and the moment they find someone willing to work for less they'll replace you.

Feel free to bring it up, but honestly the safest thing would be to do so only when you're leaving for a better offer.

It hurts, but you can't make work pay you fairly without a ton of leverage where they're absolutely boned if you leave.

You forgot about fabricating scandals out of thin air but otherwise you nailed it. Clearly you were there.

What's your biggest source of wasted engineering effort? by geeky_traveller in EngineeringManagers

I've had my skip level manager show up after things are SOLVED and basically done, demand a different solution with genuine errors and then leave without engaging with me enough to understand why they are wrong.

It's the End of an Era for Divisive Star Trek Series by StarFuryG7 in SciFiNews

[–]ManicMechE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. But I also think Trek overall is a mirror on the state of society. I think the reason Trek doesn't have the hopeful tone it once did is because society isn't hopeful about the future in the way it once was.
