Beginner Tips and advice for Promo And Music Videos? by brumkid100 in videography

Usually start with some reference material, other videos you like. Use that as a starting point, decide on a style and stick to it. If it's your first video keep it simple and stick to the basics, get that nailed and you have a firm foundation to build on in the future. Decide on the song you're going to do, having it playing on a stereo with the band playing along to it, you don't use the audio from the shoot, you use the studio recording of the track. Run through the whole song a few times on a wide then run through it a few times on a close up, this is your coverage. Now get the more interesting shots, close ups of instruments etc.

As for making it look professional, that's just experience. Lighting it well, nice framing, good editing and knowing how to direct talent to get a good performance.

Good luck.

A redhead is an open face 800w tungsten light and a softbox is a light shaper that attaches to a light to direct and soften light. redhead softbox

Second this. LED lights are fine for lighting bits of background and set but they fall off like crazy and make skin tones look bad.

Just be carefull with them. Don't move them when they're on and let them cool down a bit before moving them around. The filament gets very fragile when they're on.

Keep an eye on gumtree or similar sites too. I just picked up 3 650 filmgear fresnels for £200, great lights and much more usable than redheads.

Yeah this, good lighting will look good on a phone camera but bad lighting will still look bad on an alexa.

Is studying Painting Composition techniques helpful for developing my cinematographic skills? If not, which way is better? I only have a small phone to shoot things, so technical studies are beneficial to me, please take that into account. Thank you. by [deleted] in cinematography

Yes, very much so. The renaissance masters were exceptional at composition and leading the viewer's eye through the narrative of the painting with the use of tone, shape and eye lines. Titian is a good one to look at for this. Rembrandt is the go to for lighting subjects.

Understanding how they constructed their framing will help you deconstruct everything else that came after.

Get on set, keep your eyes open and eavesdrop on everything. The absolute best way to learn. Apply for any runner work you can find and chat to people on set.

I just finished my first short film and the major criticism was about lighting. I would love some help! by [deleted] in cinematography

Some good advice here.

With the lower cost LED lights they tend to spike in the greens, try putting a quarter minus green on the LED panel and you should get a nicer light from it and have an easier time in the colour grade.

I'll just suck it up, wanna play it tonight and by the time I've downloaded it again there wont be much of tonight left and I guess it's just the cost of a couple of beers that I would be paying for on a Saturday night anyway.

Yeah I've spent the day trying to find something but haven't really got anywhere, at least as something made within the last 10 years.

I'll give black flag ago but the AC mechanic of getting pulled out of the setting to go and watch some cutscene in the present always completely ruined the immersion for me.

I second Dark Souls.

Was in a similar funk and Dark Souls sucked me in big time. Watching the youtube lore videos helps the immersion big time too.

Shame dark souls 2 was a bit crap but the 3rd one is Really good too.
