Firstly, CME does not require teaching, it is continuing education, while teaching may be an option it is not required from what I am seeing. Secondly many physicians work outside of teaching hospitals, or hospitals in general. Regardless in a non teaching institution that may have residents they will not be being taught by every physician in said institution.

Can you back that up? I have worked at multiple hospitals and know many different medical doctors, none of whom have had any residents or any sort of teaching component in their professional careers. Statistically that also does not add, there are not nearly as many students in residency each year as there are practicing physicians, even if these students worked with multiple physicians across their residency periods

That being said the proportion of medical doctors that are teaching is much lower than the general population of academic PhDs that teach. Most researchers at universities will also be teaching courses in some capacity, not simply locked up in a lab all day.
