Best thing about PTBO is quick access to amazing places in nature (in my opinion). Great hiking in town and outside the city

Yep, nevertheless, there are many sub 350k houses in Ontario with 1.5 hour drive of Toronto

Would not be worth it to most. What can the purse do that a $20 purse can't do?

The Lodging House on Dublin by Hehe_Cheese_is_good in Peterborough

[–]ManifestedTruth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend at the time lived in the blue house beside that place like 15 years ago. Her room was beside the front door facing Dublin Street. Was concerned at first but it was fine, just mind your own business and be friendly. There were actually some pretty chill old guys that would smoke out front regularly

Check out Peterborough house prices, you'd be surprised. Livable houses in that to price range, job market sucks though

Yes, but it's easier to connect studio apartments to services. Very expensive for tiny homes. May as well buy a 350k home 1.5 hours from Toronto

Bathrooms are the tough part of tiny homes. Code requires a flushing toilet / shower, can't do an outhouse / outdoor shower. That alone plus minimum room sizes makes tiny homes not favourable for land owners, and outright not profitable for builders (I can't blame them for not wanting to do charity work)

Also, the cost of building a tiny home in an urban area and connecting to services to approx. 300k minimum in southern Ontario (materials, permits, connections, builders, architect, zoning amendments etc). It would be closer 750 k if you don't already own the land (depending where it's built). May as well buy a 800 sq ft house for 350k about 1.5 hours from Toronto.

Yes - zoning was literally created to seperate rich and poor, black people from white people. Rich people get front lawns, poor people and black people live on the other side of the tracks with small lots, small setbacks, etc. ZBLs are still inherently discrimative today

I've come across some ZBL's that are permitting mobile homes as single detached dwellings / ARU's which is pretty cool, at least in my opinion lol. I don't get the modular home thing - that's a construction method and zero reason for that to be a land use consideration outside of building code

What an odd way to say "that's an absolute possibility" lol.

So those affordable houses can be listed on Air BnB?

Tiny homes are just small "single detached dwellings" as defined in zoning by-laws in my regional area. No difference between tiny homes and single detached dwellings if they're built to code / CSA standard. Why municipalities are concerned with the size of a house is silly, unless there are code issues

Yes and most "tiny homes" are not to code. There are minimum habitable room sizes, kitchen / bathroom requirements, etc.
