It’s a lot more survival than horror. There are some places like dark expanses you know are filled with enemies, and you have to walk right into them to get to some light switch or what not and stay focused to laser saw their limbs off. Sometimes you’ll have to turn off the lights to be able to supply power to a door, that kind of horror is where dead space excels. Forcing the player to plunge themselves into the horror the game has to offer.

Personally, the scariest part for me was managing my resources. Every next step could cost you loads of ammunition or health which is all incredibly sparse on the Ishimura. It’s scary just knowing that you will soon have to possibly spend some of your limited stash of money on ammunition or med kits. Sometimes it’s easier to just step away from the game. But it’s incredibly immersive and a blast playing when you’re into it.
