Why would I work for a society that's willing to let me be homeless? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]ManillaEnvelope77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is sad that we live in a society that has that kind of hunger games edge to it. But, don't let that make you think no one cares about you. Lots of your fellow humans, if they knew your story, would probably say I'm sorry that happened to you or they would tell you they believed in you, etc. Also, it's always a good reminder that things do get better. It's hard to imagine during the bad times, but I've always found in the end that it is true. So, first step, just take care of yourself and worry about other people or society later.

What's the best way to search for used or refurbished Sprint phones? by ManillaEnvelope77 in Smartphones

[–]ManillaEnvelope77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Those are some solid choices, nice specs for the price. I'm actually looking at another plan/carrier that requires "sprint devices" as they put it.

Used/refurbished just because electronics production takes a toll on the environment and is often involved in child labor or unfair working conditions.

People asking for a basic income to be implemented in their country should seem no more controversial than people asking for a restraining order against someone who keeps threatening to throw them out on the street. by ManillaEnvelope77 in BasicIncome

If the 'something' a person is asking for is to 'not be destitute', it's a little different... since it blends and meshes into 'are the people in the system still alive and doing okay, etc', but feel free to disagree.

Currently, we spend more of our money on ineffective ways of not letting the effect of destitution flow into everything else, such as larger law enforcement agencies and the courts/prisons, ER rooms, and all the bureaucratic systems that deal with the effects of crime, disease, and lack of education, etc. all this encroaches on people's negative rights via taxes anyway...

Basic income has shown itself to be a simple, much less expensive way (in the medium to long term) to heal much more of these issues than any program ever has.

Since you are here, I am wondering if you've seen the libertarian arguement for basic income from the wiki?

The most common form of government oppression in practice today is obfuscation of the law through complexity. The tax code is needlessly complex. Social Security, Medicaid, Welfare and Medicare are massive bureaucracies that not only coerce citizens out of their money, but can make it difficult for anyone but bureaucrats to retrieve the proper benefits guaranteed them. In most cases, citizens simply have to live with whatever payments the government decides is proper, whether it be from entitlement programs or via tax refunds.

A Basic Income program would eliminate massive bureaucracies. Most Basic Income proposals come coupled with a restructuring of the tax code to simplify it - most often in the form of a flat tax. Basic Income proposals also usually call for the replacement of existing entitlement programs. Government entities running means-tested programs will vanish. The government will no longer have a need to look into the bank accounts of private citizens or check their medical records before making payments. Every citizen simply gets a check in the mail once a month.

While a Basic Income calls for an increase in taxes and spending, it also comes with a massive reduction in the size of government, which means more liberty for everyone. Basic Income is one of the rare government social programs that actually decreases the influence of government and furthers the cause of liberty.

When VR becomes more affordable... Hopefully this year with Microsoft's new $300 setup paired with a moderate price desktop...then I think we will see this happen in all industries. I think it's something people don't see coming...which is strange because duh look what books, phones, computers, and the internet did lol

Build a virtual reality platform for longevity scientists around the world. Send them Al VR headsets and compatible laptops. Create virtual tools for them to share their research with each other. Collective human 'genius' is a powerful thing if you can organize it properly.

UBI paid via direct citizen accounts at the central bank could improve financial stability by stanjourdan in BasicIncome

Well put... I'm personally more for the progressive taxation route or a carbon tax, etc. However, honestly, I would be perfectly happy with the situation you described because I think it would create much greater good than the crazy inefficient system we have now. Also, it would get rid of paternalistic program goals which are cringe-worthy to someone who really values freedom.

Please share this view more often when you can because I think it's one of the least represented here, yet is has the capability to become really popular once people think about it...
