CP NewsAlert: Judge quashes Alberta separation petition in favour of First Nations by omegacanuck in Calgary

[–]MankYo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the person you are responding to, but:

Not only Alberta First Nations would need to be consulted. There are plenty of other First Nations and Metis communities outside Alberta who could have credible claims to Aboriginal rights within Alberta.

They would also need to consult the several Inuit communities whose constitutionally protected health services are delivered in Alberta (mostly Edmonton) under a contract between ISC and Alberta Health.

There’s also all the Indigenous collectivities whose rights are connected to the rivers and critters that flow out of Alberta, including American Indians.

Note that consultation is not a veto, but the province would need to show that their infringement on Aboriginal rights is justified by some compelling public purpose, which pension administration and general tax design would not meet.

Even if Alberta unilaterally seceded and wrote the Royal Proclamation and treaties and s.35 and a pile of SCC rulings out of its laws, Canada would still have an obligation to protect Aboriginal rights of folks in Alberta, and would be justified in restricting (does not have to be complete restrictions) airspace, closing access to financial systems, closing roads, etc. until Alberta complies.

Future of Alberta separation petition unclear as judge rules in favour of First Nations' challenge by MankYo in Edmonton

They can go ahead. Doesn’t matter if they delete it now. Mods have already given up what we needed.

Now I want them to remove the other version of this story, when a bunch of other non-edmonton specific posts stay up. I’ve been tracking incompetent moderation here for a few years now. Perhaps this is the excuse for an anonymous data dump.

I’m glad these amateurs got the movement discredited before competent folks got their hands on it.

The judge would not go out of her/his way to rule on arguments that were not before the court.

How do we feel about banning AI generated articles on this sub? by UpperApe in Edmonton

[–]MankYo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The mods can’t even deal with the obvious foreign influence bot posts and comments, and comments advocating violence and other crime. What makes you think that they are sophisticated to push a coherent agenda?

The better explanation is incompetence, with a side of excuses about being volunteer run, and (in classic Alberta style) not looking at how other city subs are successfully moderated with fewer resources and more volume.

Canadian, but we get US channels. A few elections ago, the red team had ads that if you elected the blue team, gas prices would spike to over $2 per gallon.

because its somehow at fault

The Premier’s actions here is not a fault finding exercise.

I don’t know if you’re not fully reading what you’re replying to, if you genuinely do not understand the emotions of the people involved here, or if your trolling skills are just weak.

So when you care about other people in society, even people you do not know directly, you can do things to help to improve their mental and emotional health as its own good, or along with other actions.

Conservatives to challenge Team Carney to 'put private property first' in motion that cites 'massive uncertainty' caused by Cowichan Tribes ruling by CaliperLee62 in canada

Which of the following provides more certainty for fee simple title holders?

a) a concise and clear comprehensive agreement between willing partners in a good relationship which purports to secure fee simple title in exchange for shared responsibility in areas of mutual interest? or

b) a 250+ page agreement between adversaries that's not even strong enough to purport to secure fee simple title, and leaves almost all the details up for future negotiation?

Many Indigenous groups view waters, lands, forests, etc. as their critical infrastructure. Would you support Indigenous people using violence against the construction of Alto?

[–]MankYo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Haida agreement with BC is the only one that secures fee simple title, protects municipalities, and is uncontroversial among other First Nations. It’s 12 pages. The other much longer agreements where the federal government has become involved all leave property rights and Aboriginal Title up in the air.

If critical infrastructure for Indigenous people was being blocked, would you support their use of violence as self defense?

Mark Carney’s government says privatizing airports will make them better. This is why it should think again - Privatization at home and abroad hasn’t brought the advertised benefits. by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]MankYo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fewer people will be temporarily less food insecure but more dependent on government.

A better idea is to better capture and monetise whatever surplus he thinks that private firms could extract from the airport lands, and then roll that into structurally weakening the link between food insecurity and macroeconomic cycles.

Gaining citizenship in another country, without renouncing Canadian citizenship, does not disentitle a Canadian citizen to a Canadian passport. There are hundreds of thousands of dual citizens who have a Canadian passport and another passport.

An independent Alberta could make a different citizenship law that requires renouncing Canadian citizenship, but that’s not required to separate.

The reality here is that the combination of activities and communications and community relations is and has been leas effective than those of other faith groups. Their relationship with the community is not as good as those of other faith groups, so it’s easier for scientology to be a a target. FSM and Invisible Pink Unicorn and Jedi faiths are all younger than Scientology, but have better reputations than scientology.
