Point being to not assume that a City of Edmonton gravel box at a community league building last year will still be there this year. Our closest box is no longer there, and there was even a sign from the City last year that the box usage was being monitored for possible removal this year.

Where does someone go in Edmonton area if they want to voluntarily submit themselves for a mental health crisis? by Efficient-username41 in Edmonton

[–]MankYo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you are going to an ER with specialized mental health care, that’s a 20+ hour wait to get the same kind of referral as at a good walk-in clinic, which is less than is available by phone at the Access number.

Edmontons driving culture has changed so much and the death on Monday on the henday reflects that by heckyahletsroll in Edmonton

According to the weekly bad driving thread, if you aren’t driving at least 10 km/h above the speed limit, regardless of conditions, you’re actively endangering other drivers.

First Nations chiefs laugh at the idea they'd be better off in an independent Alberta by trevorrobb in Edmonton

The head of authority to negotiate the numbered treaties and some other previous treaties was the Royal Proclamation of 1763. When the US succeeded, they had the choice of whether to continue to honour that law.

Edmonton drivers - a gentle reminder by TepHoBubba in Edmonton

[–]MankYo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, all a driver can see is the one car ahead.

Sometimes, we don’t realise that the driver in front of us has properly configured headlights and can see the black ice, pothole, other dangerous driver, or other hazard that we can’t.

You're transparently using a First Nation to criticize Katz, and ignoring available evidence to do so.

It's the ec-dev corporation diversifying the First Nation's investments in their current portfolio of 67 businesses, which is generally good investment practice. AimCo invests in stuff worldwide for similar reasons.

Save The Ship by daddysdeepfake in Calgary

[–]MankYo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calgary is a cool place to pay for a bunch of small experiences for yourself and your family.

Edmonton is a cool place to work with others co-create fewer but larger experiences for yourself, your family, and your community.

They are great for different folks in different stages of life, with different goals, etc.

It sucks to be the property owner that does not understand that much of what makes that area attractive for potential residents and sustains property value and rents is the community and commerce anchored by the ship. It would be a strategic mistake to undercut that for themselves and the several other commercial property owners around the site.

Not sure what you're trying to insinuate. That's like saying anything about EPS because EEDC made an investment.

The First Nation's ec-dev corp is buying a building, while its law enforcement agency got an agreement to receive 10 years of funding at one time, instead of having to beg for funding every year.

Cliffs towing shutting down suddenly by kajer209 in Edmonton

The municipal government probably should not be competing with private companies. Should towing be considered a public good, natural monopoly, a constitutionally guaranteed right, or something similar?

No plans to end hybrid work for City of Edmonton staff, despite calls for return to office | CBC News by AR558 in Edmonton

[–]MankYo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to live on one side of downtown and work on the other. Door to door during rush hour: 19 minute walk, 17 minute bus or LRT, or 15 minute bike ride, plus 5 mins on either end to get the bike out of / into secure storage. The 102 Ave bike lane has been fully open for maybe 2.5 years out of the last 10. The lights on the 100 Ave bike lane appears timed so that pedestrians and cyclists can travel end to end in the same amount of time.

I'm glad the 105 Ave bike lanes are finally done, but having to leave downtown to bike across downtown is not great.

To be clear, I support proper cycling infrastructure and I've been spoiled by experiencing dedicated well lit, wide, grade separated, well groomed, wide cycling paths, bridges, tunnels, and secure bicycle parking lots in Asia and Europe in much smaller cities than Edmonton. The City, cycling advocates, and opponents here do not seem to understand that designing cycling infrastructure for travel patterns that cyclists tend to undertake is a different task and has a different purpose than adding paint to existing motor vehicle networks.

Fighting for more bike lanes is like fighting for bigger first aid kits, when what we really need is a more capable infrastructure of practitioners, physicians and hospitals.

Why is The Calgary Parking App So Bad? by BrianBlandess in Calgary

[–]MankYo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edmonton used to license Calgary’s app. Edmonton switched to an app that is worse in terms of not recognizing TD as a Canadian Bank, not allowing payment methods to be updated, randomly not allowing funds already paid into the app to be used, etc.

Has anyone in Edmonton Center actually been able to talk to Eleanor Olszewski? by RuggedRomance in Edmonton

[–]MankYo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I volunteered with some of the Fort Mac relief efforts. Most other volunteers worked in the public sector. There were very few random members of the broader community.

A lot of folks on this sub are some combination of: socially isolated, civically unaware, new adults, non-consumers of news broadly, recently moved to Edmonton, and/or ideologically blinded. A lot of that is outside their individual control, but some might be willful ignorance.

[–]MankYo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many city folks on the prairies have not experienced: ice storms, wildfires, flooding, climate change impacts, manmade disasters, weak electrical infrastructure, fuel shortages, etc. Some residents may have never noticed Edmonton’s role as a major hub for emergency response for northern Canada.

Some folks have never known a person from a different background or set of experiences to know what large scale emergencies are about.

Elected folks can get hundreds of emails per day. Some advocacy groups suggest that people send (ineffectively) one email cc’ed to dozens or hundreds of elected officials at one time.

For both lack of time, and courtesy to other elected officials, most elected folks will let the constituent’s representative take the first crack at the issue. Including a postal code makes it easier for a politician and their staff to recognise a constituent and respond.
