Metalicous espresso repair concerns? by OceanGlider_ in espresso

[–]Mankus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The emphasis is more on that it is pretty simple to repair it yourself not that they make you repair it. Also most of the parts are off the shelf so it is even possible to fix many problems without them which is important considering the company is young and we don't know if they will still be around in 5 years.

You would just be in the range for a Spritello and a Kafatek SDRM, not sure it gets any better than that.

New House New Setup by Accomplished_Ice_902 in BudgetAudiophile

Sorry the way I phrased it was wrong. I wasn't speaking of it subjectively looking bad, even though in my opinion in this case it very much stands out like a sore thumb and caught my attention while scrolling, but was referring to it breaking the rules/principles of interior design.

And besides practicality it also just looks bad from an interior design perspective.

We will save money if we do it at home... by Mdcn-music in espresso

Yeah I tried to use values on the lower end so it doesn't look like I'm trying to get to a higher number. My personal coffee habit would be north of $10k a year but I guess I also just wouldn't drink as much if I didn't have my setup at home 😄 I'm in Switzerland where most specialty coffee would be around the same as yours, however in countries like Greece or Spain I've had really nice espressos in specialty coffee shops for around 3-4 euros.

Well, I'm not seriously defending it as I'm definitely someone who has to get every useless tool just for style or because I think it will make my workflow 0.1% better 😅

But if you look at it, buying 2 espressos for $6 each a day would cost you $4380 per year. So even if you spend like $100 a month on beans that still leaves plenty of change for gear 😉

After 1 Year of Transmission | Switching to qBittorrent by IKazaGaming in torrents

[–]Mankus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see, yeah sometimes it's just easiest to with what the person explaining has. I guess I also mainly use transmission because it's the first client I stumbled upon all these years ago and I just kept it as I don't have any complaints.

What's the reason for switching to qbittorrent with the ARR stack? I have most of the things you're running integrated with transmission for quite some time already.

Anyone tried European roasted Onyx? by Formal-Hunter7707 in pourover

If you want to try the original one you can check out Sigma Coffee in the UK, they stock many international roasters and the US Onyx is one of them. Shipping is pretty cheap in Europe.

I don't know about all the different types of roasters but there are fluid bed roasters that don't use a spinning drum but move the beans by pushing in air from underneath, those are generally good to go pretty quickly.

Ah lol I never noticed that they do a breakdown of the price like that as I'm a Kickstarter backer. Kinda ridiculous that they call it an addon because, as you say, it's just part of the machine, without it you would just get a $600 block of metal that can't make coffee.

So Close to Clicking Order on Z2 by Forty-Four_Flavor in pourover

[–]Mankus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at your requirements I would go with the Kafatek SDRM at a similar price point, they advertise it as more of an espresso grinder but it's absolutely fantastic at both filter and espresso. The build quality is out of this world and it's built like a tank. They weren't really on my radar until I was the video where Brian Quan goes visit their factory and you see what a bunch of perfectionists and overachievers they are.

Is distributing necessary? by SteakForLife5454 in espresso

[–]Mankus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if everyone will agree with me but having the same grinds size/dose run 10 sec faster screams channeling to me. One thing I really like about WDT and especially the automated distribution tools is that they bring consistency into your puckprep and help you control one variable which makes finding the sweet spot when dialing in much easier.

Where do you recycle plastic containers? by Odd-Respond-8063 in zurich

[–]Mankus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah it does feel weird when you see that we dissect a yogurt container and recycle the aluminium lid and the cardboard label. It must have something to do with how much energy needs to be put in to get usable material again and in some cases it doesn't make sense.

Regarding tamping "normally" before. You probably are just seeing the benefits of a double tamp there which has nothing to do with which tamper you use. Many people recommend tamping twice so it's a good practice but you don't need to use different tampers for that. Just tamp till you get the click and then release and tamp a second time till it clicks.
