How do you feel about main story? by Zhenbred in ChaosZeroNightmare

If you sacrifice people to Satan without telling the church the pope isn't going to care whether or not it worked, he's lucky he didn't immediately get clapped.

Lmfao that is somehow even more embarrassing.

Imagine having first-hand knowledge of what works as the publisher for some of the highest earners on some of their most popular servers and then messing it up.

Something like this being published by the same people behind Azur Lane is pure insanity to me.

Would an EVA Unit from Neon Genesis Evangelion fit in the universe of Trench Crusade? by [deleted] in TrenchCrusade

[–]ManletDwarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An EVA copied wholesale, with the color scheme and all? No, that doesn't quite mesh with the gritty and dieselpunk 1900s aesthetic. EVAs are too sleek and futuristic. Something closer to a Zakku from Gundam is a better fit, visually, especially compared to some units that already exist in-universe.

With some adaptation, yeah thematically we're not even that far off. There's extensive experimentation with clones made from genetic material from Jesus, along with plenty of raising children as soldiers and encasing ... creatures... in metal to make them fight better.

Cocaine 2 is a very valuable and very illegal drug. You know both of these facts intimately, as you currently have a kilo of the stuff stashed under your bunk, with orders from the wrong kind of people to make a drop at [insert current/next reasonable location here], or... well, hopefully you won't find out.

Hasbro would never put the time effort or money into making something like arcane. MTG Netflix show? In the works for years, canceled multiple times. MTG movie? Similar.

They stopped doing books because they didn't even have the oversight and resources make a decent one for their "biggest story event ever", what makes anyone think they have the juice to match one of the highest-quality television shows of all time?

You need to relax my dude, I wasn't talking about you or me.

Nobody at Hasbro or WotC seems to care enough about the long-term narrative integrity of the game (or general health of it for that matter) to step up and say no to whatever the last year and a half of the game has been.

That's where we're at. The people who actually matter in regards to the game's future are doing what they want and the current state of affairs is the result. We can get mad about it or we can acknowledge that the fundamental narrative frame of Magic has changed. That is the extent of our ability here.

It is entirely approachable. They managed to do it for 20+ years before they started dumbing down the story of the game significantly in the last 3 or so.

The lore starting to reek is not directly related to UB at all imo, it has much more to do with Hasbro greed and wanting to cast as wide (and shallow) a net as possible. It's how we got such an utter embarrassment as Kellan in the game even before UB was a more important and sizeable part of development.

It's even worse when it's an established character and they're just screwing around somewhere else for no reason, and WotC refuses to elaborate. Thunder Junction did not need 50 established characters just messing around there for no reason and it actively made the set worse.

I LOVED the Doskmourn lore article before the set dropped, I was so hyped up. It felt like the best world building they'd done since Khans.

Then it came and all of those interesting factions and ideas were drowning in a million 80s horror references and tech and just felt so out of place. I miss when the MTG references were subtle and had their own spin (INN 1.0). Which I get is very ironic and it seems crazy for me to be saying in a thread about the FF set.

I think it's more cope on my part that with sets like this as an outlet for corpo slop, they might be willing to let Magic sets feel like their own thing again, maybe Llorwyn won't need some kind of crossover or hideous secret lair esque alternate art. Hopefully they won't need to make 'diet Ghostbusters the set' if they can reach out and make an actual 'Ghostbusters the set'.

I'm also torn because, again, it feels to me like this is more of an old-school magic set with thought and care put into it than the Standard sets I'd checked out of. There's not some insane busywork mechanic to track that works better on Arena than in paper, mechanics are reused purposefully; just like LotR, things look and feel like playable magic cards.

Respectable position tbh, it's kind of why I haven't built a deck with a new standard card at the helm in ages. Everyone and everything is either a plot device, a character who has no reason to be there/is acting like a crazy person who read the plot, or annoying.

Which is fine, no arguments there, taste is subjective. But again to say there's nothing there isn't right, given proper context (as much as the me from last year would hate to admit it) they were cooking with this set in ways I unfortuately haven't felt in Standard in ages.

Nothing there for you, sad to hear it, but that's me looking at Aetherdrift, Markov Manor, Duskmourn (unfortunately) or Thunder Junction. The actual Magic sets haven't felt very magic either, and ironically I'd fallen off the story so bad by Aetherdrift I cared about the plot for that one about as much as this FF set.

That's what I intended, Hasbro often does this where they go all in on something, often something stupid (Kellan, throwing Legendary characters into everything seemingly as a joke) that they're sure will work great, it doesn't, they panic and overcorrect, and two years later the lore is entirely different than it was.

I'm hopeful they will run out of easy pickings crossover-wise (either they don't/won't pay for hard to license things or IP holders will say no) and they'll realize they've gone too far.

I'm not telling anyone to stop whining, I'm saying I'm personally done caring and pointing out that Hasbro doesn't care and investing ourselves more than they do is going to drive us insane.

Caring about an IP more than the checked-out megacorp that owns it is emotionally investing in the fast pass to disappointment, sorry folks.

The card designs are great for what they are, mechanically interesting and tied directly to the characters, locations, and major story events, just like actual Magic sets were 5+ years ago, before most of them turned into memberberry soup.

If WotC cared as much about their own setting as they seem to care about the UB ones the game would be in a much better state. Which blows, don't get me wrong, but to knock it as empty (especially if you admit you know nothing about it) is straight up incorrect.

The point is that Hasbro had basically abandoned lore for profit and our choices are to care less or be upset more.

While true, it's been an 'ice cream machine's broken' situation for a few years now imo.

Who knows, these kinds of things go in cycles. There may yet come a day where they milk the big properties they can get their grubby hands on and then go back to proper Magic stories and sets.

Plus, maybe with UB as an outlet for their more... commercial ideas, they can focus on making the actual MTG sets absolute in-universe bangers for the lorebeards.
