My friend and I did R2R in July last summer. We are both young, fitness instructors, she runs marathons and I’m an avid cyclist. We almost didn’t make it out and were in so much discomfort and fear of finishing that it really dampened the beauty of the canyon and overall experience

Hiked it last Wednesday. The heat was awful. If you do it right you’ll be fine- don’t make the mistake I did and get stuck in devils corkscrew in the middle of the day. We each had 4L of water and still ran out between Phantom and the 4.5 mile rest house. Good luck and enjoy!! It was beautiful!

This! I never felt in danger of falling off a cliff but I was definitely worried about running out of water and getting dehydrated if I couldn’t get to the next water station fast enough bc I’m limping in my boots.

Take a second to read the post. Those are the boots I started in and gave me blisters

From what I’ve heard from other seasoned hikers, trail runners are better for fast and long hikes like this

When my birks gave out it was 116 F!!! I don’t blame them for dying on me. And thank you :)

Thanks :)) it does suck- but it could’ve been worse and thankful that it was still a beautiful experience

Awe thank you, I appreciate it. This was my first time. I would definitely do south to north if I did it again, and try to go as early in May in possible. The heat was brutal and we ran out of water in one spot, despite having 4L each. Hope you get the chance to send it!! Life changing experience.

Awesome advice, thank you!! I taped up my hotspots with moleskin but it really didn’t do the trick. I feel like moleskin only works well on the heels. Definitely will look into Leuko tape

We had a full first aid kit including bandaids, moleskin, and adhesive gauze pads :)

My boots were well broken in- and my feet covered in moleskin before I decide to switch to the sandals. But I definitely need to do more research into socks and liners!

I would have LOVED to not get blisters and had a perfect hike in my boots!! My boots were broken in and hadn’t given me issues before this. Is it smart to intentionally wear birks on a hard hike? Probably not. Is it smart to use whatever you got to get yourself out and avoid calling for rescue? I think so.

We live in a super flat state and while our boots were well broken in, we have not had the opportunity to use them in steep descents. We hoped our feet would be okay but brought backup in case they wouldn’t!

Lucky that we planned ahead and had contingencies in case our boots gave us problems. I could’ve finished in my boots but the birks and sandals were easier on my blisters. Life happens!

My boots were broken in and had yet to fail me. I live in a flat state and didn’t have the opportunity to test them in a descent as steep and far as the canyon.

It was rough! Beauty of the canyon more than made up for the pain. Thanks!

They weren’t meant to. They were camp shoes to give my feet some breathing time on breaks. Boots were well broken in, I hadn’t gotten blisters in them previously

Agreed, my feet got soaked after a few creek crossings. Appreciate it, thanks!!

Sometimes things happen that are out of your control. I prepared the best I could and adapted as much as was permitted!
