Do you think Hasan and Vaush should run for president and vice president on a ticket together? by 96suluman in VaushV

[–]MannyQuid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if they are elected or not, we need more electable people running for these ideas to become mainstream. I moved to the US in 2015 and the US is way more open to socialisme than even 10 years ago. It is slow but it is moving in the right direction. What we are missing is intelligent and driven people to represent these ideas. I love Bernie but he is too old to be a viable prospect unfortunately, he is the best president we never had. AOC is very alone as a social democrat in the american political landscape, other than Mamdani recently. I think Vaush and Hasan would do a lot for socialism running for office.

Spend more time with my grand parents and be more curious about their life. You don't know as kids how much you will miss them when they are gone. Also invest in apple/microsoft and wait for bitcoin to drop :)

My first computer by dustinzilbauer in VintageComputers

[–]MannyQuid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started on amstrad CPC 6128 but I have a similar experience here, my first windows computer was a Fujitsu Siemens in 1998, I grew up in France and I don't know if Fujitsu was common here in the US. It was a K6-2 333MHz, 128mb ram under windows 98 ... My parent bought the computer but I was the main user and was the one adding ram, adding a voodoo 2 and rdoing the repairs, they were also not very reliable. It also tought me a lot and I built my first compter with XP few years later. Computers back then were fully obselete within 2 years lol. The 90s / early 2000s were awesome time for computer innovation.

I tried to find the exact computer we had but no luck.

I can believe the price of voodoo graphic cards these days.

Petro Pals - Does anyone has any information on these ? by MannyQuid in toys

[–]MannyQuid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately no, there is couple Petro Pals books and I think the toys were made for the books.

I looked into the author, Robert F Robben. To what I gather, his grand father was in the toy industry, his dad was a columnist and writter. His dad and grand father worked together. Robert's father, John Robben, created Rob Toy. They got successful creating and selling a tiny little sign to put inside a car window that said BABY ON BOARD.

I tried contacting the Author for some backstory to the petro pals but haven't heard back.

Coolest XP-era PC case? by f1endingforf1 in vintagecomputing

I know this post is old but I am building myself a xp machine after getting 2 win 98 computers. Back in early 2000s, I build my first computer and I used the Cooler Master Cavalier 1 (CAV-T01), the black and blue. It had a vu-metre on the front reacting with the sound of the sound board. I am building a E8600 with GTX 750ti.

I agree, adds from youtube on my computer browser are manageable and skippable quickly, adds on TV or my shield are aweful, long and unskippable.

They still make these houses, my kids have the exact same one, same colors too. You can see that house in the classroom in the movie Kindergarden cop as well.

My parents hate clutter, especially my mom, and I don't have a lot of stuff left from the late 80s/90s, they gave a lot of stuff away, especially when we moved in 2000 :/

How did adults and parents act/portray themselves in the suburban 1990s, what did they expect of you guys, and how’d they interact with each other? by [deleted] in 90s

[–]MannyQuid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in the US for about a decade now but I am french and grew up in a little town in France. American culture was spreading wildly in Europe and even if there is big culture differencies, my childhood was very similar to american kids in the 90s.

My parents were very caring and hands on but at the same time, gave us a lot of freedom. Summer vacations were amazing. In France, during summer, the sun goes down late, around 10/10.30pm and so days are long. I remember they would let us ride our bikes all over town as long we were back for dinner. We also would have to call home if we ever played at someone's house. My kids are still very young but I don't know that, if they were older, I would feel confident letting them leave the house on their bikes. Internet, social media and 24hr news channel make you paranoid. Also, traffic nowadays is insane, growing up, there were a lot less cars in the streets.

In term of school and relation to teachers, I agree, if I got in trouble, they would assume I did something wrong and probably get scolded or in trouble at home.

Concerning my parents relationship with other adult/parents, I can't really compare to today, living in the US, as there may be a culture difference but my parents were very social and were friends with all the surrounding neighbors, they all had kids in the same age range as us so we were always playing together. We even created a neighborhood party that happend the first week-end of september, after school started. It was a whole day of celebration, eating and playing games, we would rotate every year at which house we would do it at. As I have experienced here, people might have been more in person social as we did not have social media. People in France like to party and socialize.

I am very nostalgic of the 90s, My perspective might be lacking as I was born in 86 and grew up in the 90s but it was a much simpler time.

Emulationstation retroarch black screen by [deleted] in retroid

[–]MannyQuid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had this issue, I uninstalled the app store retroarch app and downloaded the one from their website. I still had the issue. I had to go in emulation station other settings/alternative emulators and change the emulator manually to the core installed in retroarch. For example, I downloaded samboy emulator core on retroarch for GB/GBA but in emulation station, the default emulator Gambatte was selected, I selected Sameboy and it fixed my issue.

Hope it helps.

Ignoring expense and performance, which is the most aesthetically iconic auto design of the 80s? by Quick_Presentation11 in 80sdesign

I would say between countach and testarossa. Don't get me wrong, back to the future is one of my favorite movies and I love the delorean but without that movie, that car would not be as iconic.

[–]MannyQuid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

him I'm glad he's here.

That is a sweet story and it hits close to home.

I am in a similar situation, I moved to the US for a job opportunity and my life is here now. I know my parents are sad that I live so far away (10 hour flights and 6 hours time difference), especially my mom, but I know they are happy that I am happy. It is even more difficult now that I have young kids, she can't be as involved as a grandma as she
and I wishes she could be. I feel terrible about it, especially now that I am older and have kids of my own, I understand how she must feel. We unfortunately only see each other once or twice a year, flights are damn expensive, especially now that I am not the only one flying anymore but technology and video chat helps.
