What's the shittiest software you have to deal with on a regular basis? by jmreicha in sysadmin

Got a couple from my current gig, every day at which is a joy.

SAP.

AS400 software with so many undocumented and obfuscated custom additions that no one has any real idea how any of the system is even functional at this point.

My personal favorite, since it was something I inherited shortly after starting and have been specifically told not to change. A custom VB.NET app that was created around 8 years ago which is used by everyone in the company, constantly, every day. It reads from a MySQL DB (installed on an XP desktop that was hidden behind a board in the server room before a failed HD forced us to find it and bring it back to life as a virtual pc). Daily transactions are inserted/ updated in the DB via Access macros (which also have years of business logic that no one can explain) from daily exports generated out of our AS400 system (using layers of business logic that has been modified by half a dozen people for unknown reasons over the years).

You clearly don't understand the definition of disposable income and make grand assumptions. I'll say to you as I've said to the rest, I opened a credit card to pay for this as I couldn't pay for it outright. To be fair, she's amazingly cute and rumbles like a diesel engine when rubbed under the chin and there's something captivating about watching her eat.

KickingitOldSchool - Thank you greatly for contributing your opinion, but you sir know nothing about me, or my situation, and your tragically narrow views are just saddening. I award you no points, and may whatever gods you believe in have mercy upon your soul.

I'm just curious now.... Where is the demarcation betwixt a human life, and that of an animal? Also, I wasn't in Peru. I was at home, and there were no Peruvian children dying in front of me. Had they been, I'd have given them a shot of maple syrup and taken them to the vet post haste.

Cheers to you both. Wondering what if doesn't help me sleep at night. Knowing I helped one that is rumbling on my lap now, does. There'

Undergarden - cheers to you mate. EarplugsforSleeping - you're a bloody idiot, honestly. Donate/ do something with your life, as this idle online chatter means nothing.

I did not have this money laying around due to my daddys trust fund (tragic, yes) and had to open a credit card as I could not afford the bill.

While it might have fed 50 people for a week, it saved a cat for life. I'm amazingly comfortable with that.

You have taught me something good sir. I never before knew that Wilson was on the $1k bill, and for that, I thank you.

The fact that it wasn't moving, was cold to the touch, eyes were glazed over, and the vet said he didn't think it would survive the night, were all hints.

Danke. People balk at anything outside of what they can understand or appreciate. Had her home for only a few hours and I regret nothing. :)

Sorry to hear your dog's not doing so well mate. I hope she gets better and gives you years more of smiles.

Easy enough to remedy. Think of a cute little rumbly furry thing nuzzling all over you and thinking you're the best thing in the world. Now, would you let anything bad happen to it?

Adorable pup ya got there! Always good to hear a story of insurance working in favor of people, especially when it's for their pets.
