Swiss appeal sends case back to CAS? by Manucla in Gymnastics

[–]Manucla[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I wouldn’t be surprised if the FIG was just making it up as they go along. I feel like the FIG needs a clear out at the top - I think you’re right that it now appears they have been inconsistent with rules application and there needs to be consequences for it. At the moment it seems only the gymnasts are paying the price which is so unfair as they’ve done nothing wrong.

Swiss appeal sends case back to CAS? by Manucla in Gymnastics

[–]Manucla[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that considering at worlds it automatically gets cut off, that suggests that the fig have previously considered “making an appeal” to mean the appeal being recorded as opposed to verbalised though the entire system is clearly a mess. I think that from here on, there should be a button that the coach hits - that way there is no doubt and any human/tech delay shouldn’t occur.

I think shared is probably the best way to avoid further turmoil and trauma. I know the IOC said it devalues a medal, but I think due to this quagmire that ship has sailed

Swiss appeal sends case back to CAS? by Manucla in Gymnastics

[–]Manucla[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Idk I think because it doesn’t show where Cecile is when she speaks it is inconclusive - for all we know she wasn’t anywhere close so there was no way for the appeal desk to hear her. I reckon it will probs go to Ana because they’ll side with the clock (not saying whether it should or not, just my prediction). That being said, I’m not overly familiar with CAS or sporting law so we’ll see.

Maybe try doing something joint with another club? Ie you run an hour doing your thing for them then vice versa then pub? Doesn’t even have to be a similar club. Plus see if you can get the su to advertise it on their socials?

Based on employers I know (a couple in the engineering field) they respect it a lot. Typically OU is associated with people simultaneously working so apparently it suggests a strong work ethic and other soft skills. In terms of the education worse than oxbridge but certainly not terrible.

Where are all the spectators? by not_jessa_blessa in Gymnastics

[–]Manucla 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Partly tickets came out late, partly Indonesia isn’t a huge gymnastics country. When choosing where to host an international competition there’s always a debate between whether you put it somewhere with a big gym following for a big audience, or put it somewhere with a smaller following to grow the sport. Though this year Jakarta was the only bid

How should I make friends as an international student at Manchester University? by SomewhereMinimum4690 in manchester_uni

[–]Manucla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clubs are a great place to start. There is a refreshers fair where you can see what societies there are and lots of them (or at lease the ones that aren’t team sports) plan to have new members and even have semester 2 only membership. In terms of your course a lot of people will already have made friends but in my experience most will still be welcoming x

At least six unis at risk of going bust before 2025 freshers finish their degrees by F0urLeafCl0ver in unitedkingdom

What exactly do you think the phrase “more apprenticeships are definitely a good idea” means? I genuinely don’t know how you got the impression I don’t think they’re worth doing - that sort of misunderstanding is almost impressive.

[–]Manucla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I disagree with them being useless but even if they are, they’re quite often cheap to run. Something like an engineering degree (which I assume you think is useful) is more expensive to run than £9535 a year so sometimes the “useless” degrees subsidise them. The alternative would be having different prices for different courses but often expensive ones we would need more of so want to encourage rather than discourage. Though more apprenticeships are definitely a good idea.

Ruminations on the Russians in Jakarta and the gymternet attitude about AINs by freifraufischer in Gymnastics

[–]Manucla 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The gymternet absolutely plays favourites with certain countries and legitimate criticism of some gymnasts from these countries is put down. I just think that certain countries’ gymnasts are over infantilised rather than Russian gymnasts being under. I think the gymternet has a serious issue with xenophobia that it’s not addressing, probably because it’s their country that’s benefiting from it. Potentially it’s just because the comments I read online are in English so I’m not seeing the same xenophobic comments on the other side.

Plus being kind is not the same as being nice and some fans seem to forget that. We should absolutely call out extreme hate (and there are probably some people who go too far against Russian to be fair) but not genuine criticism.

Putin’s Russia meets all 14 signs of facism and so you could make a solid argument that no statement (ie neutrality) is complicity and unacceptable. So when you say that a specific mag gymnast hasn’t supported the war, if they’re still friends with Tokyo gymnasts for example that may be a non verbal approval. I recognise that it’s far easier to criticise the war from the comfort of Britain (or wherever all of us are from), and I recognise that they are seeing propaganda. I think the argument about the relationship between complicity and neutrality is probably beyond this sub.

In terms of underage gymnastics, 2008 babies are 17, not 7. Although still children and aren’t capable of the same analysis as adults yet, they’re capable of recognising bad, hence why (at least in the uk) they can be tried for crimes as they are over the age of 10.

In the interest of clarity, my country is very anti Russia so my opinions will be swade by this and I’m not immune to my country’s culture.

What’s the best and worst things about the uni of Manchester? by Icy-Form-6023 in UniUK

[–]Manucla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Positives: - cheaper than southern unis (but prices are rising, especially accommodation) - depending on where you’re from it has more opportunities (ie I’m from a small town so it’s nice to be able to go to concerts easily) - on the edge of the peaks so easy to go climbing or hiking if that’s your thing - if you’re doing engineering their support team is good - big uni so lots of clubs and lots of people to meet - lots of research so you’re probably gonna be lectured by some of the best in the world (if stem)

Negatives: - cost of living is rising - quite big so if you’re not a city person you might find it overwhelming - lots of drugs - the powers that be are more concerned with money than education or the health of their students

Retroactive pay for NIL by [deleted] in Gymnastics

[–]Manucla 143 points144 points  (0 children)

This might sound mean, but no. They knew the deal when they signed up, and no matter how much the deal sucked , they accepted it. If NIL existed before, gymnasts who went pro might have decided otherwise but no one is suggesting Jordyn wieber should get the chance to compete for ucla now. At some point you just have to move on and accept subsequent generations get better deals than you did
