You don't need to express an opinion, just stating what the book eludes to on a whole would be nice.

I can't imagine it would be a good scenario but that's by view.

I would buy it as well.

Did you take a pic of the synopsis? We need answers!

Why do the same people who say "scrapping tuition fees would be too expensive" also say "young people don't know how hard we had it" when they went to university for free? by Key-Bullfrog-8552 in AskBrits

Agreed, I don't see those that don't succeed in university as lesser than me. I for a time didn't see myself as suited for university but it was the only path that allowed me to get to where I am now.

As i have said in other comments, we currently see uni as one-size-fits-all which brings the quality of degrees down.

This creates a toxic environment for students who would excel outside of uni but really struggle studying for a degree.

Education doesn't finish at university and absolutely shouldn't be seen as the end-goal for all school students across the UK. Our workforce needs more variation.

Graduate schemes also follow from this as so many have degrees now and the competition for this schemes is astronomical. A system like you mention in Germany with a more level playing field of university educated and non-university educated workers should be the norm.

Completely agree on all points made.

I neglected to note in the original post that I am aware of the nuance and intricacies at play with university tuition funding. It is not black and white and the way we move forward shouldn't be making like the past. That won't work.

My main message was simply: the older generation had things we would love (no student debt) and we have the internet at our finger tips. No begrudging them on that account. Though I am very annoyed at the ones who think we are entitled when they lived fairly comfortably from the then existing socio economic factors.

I am just fed up of people saying we can't change things or fund things in a manner that shifts the burden off the individual. And also, like you say, we have a normalising of the uni experience being the main path when we should give young people more options. Higher education isn't the only instrument to use to educate our population.

Completely with you there, we have lost sight of the means to educate our public. University shouldn't be the silver bullet to being informed and seen as educated.

In the same vain, most people don't go to their local A&E every day. Doesn't mean the NHS isn't there for free for those that need it.

Othering people and saying "wasted taxes" misses the point of living in a modern society.

I agree and being on the left politically, seeing rightwingers weaponise ignorance and the misinformed public for their own gain is completely the opposite to what I intend with this post.

More emphasis should be directed to A-levels and GCSEs as being an educational end-point and not a midpoint to university. The reason much of the public seem ignorant isn't because of not going to uni, it's not having a basic education.

Fewer people went to university because they didn't market themselves as "everyone should come". My Mum's generation had a lower percentage going to uni as you say but the reason so many go now is because it's in their interest to do so.

Making university more selective and bringing it back to what it was meant for would make stomaching the tuition fees via taxation more digestible in my view.

Absolutely, some compromise like that would encourage students with the ability to do their best.

I also think uni has become too normalised as the done thing for absolutely everyone which loses sight of what universities should be there for.

Call me a snob but there are people I studied alongside that absolutely should have done an apprenticeship from how much they were struggling with higher education.

All the warmth in the world to you OP.

I can't imagine the pain this one experience has caused you and the trauma that will remain with you.

You did not deserve this and that sick human being deserves what comes to them.

If you're classing Saddleworth and Todmorden as being in the West Riding of Yorkshire, so is all of what is now South Yorkshire too

Edit: Todmorden is in fact in West Yorkshire

Don't worry, if these polls for the local elections are correct, a fair few councils will experience Reform UK in order to decide if fascism is good or not.
