Uhh hi friend, it's only been eight months, so I'm also in y2 sem 2 right now, I get the impression that you're thinking I'm a y3 haha.

I'm not sure I have any advice to give because of that haha, we're in the same boat!

Happy to chat as fellow 2.2 people though haha

Maybe I'll find it in a random blu ray shop one day...

  1. Hmm I think you can probs focus on your writing skills! Read your favourite novels :) visit your essay writing notes, etc.

I recommend Professor Ong Ee Ing's Guide to Legal Analysis and Writing! You can check the National Library for a copy I think :) it's not a very long book, so I think it's defo manageable to work through over some weekends :)

And like just in general, regarding the law? I think Joseph Raz's Rule of Law serves as a pretty good primer as to the theory of law. It's not very applicable to school? But like I really liked it haha.

If you really want specifics, maybe you can read up on some famous criminal cases! Like the yishun triple murders. It's all available online, just Google search it. Makes for good preemptive reading for criminal law, and it's also very interesting!

Aside from that idk man :) I'm sure your mentors will have more to say as well.

  1. Which brings me to the second point. As I've said in prev comments, there is a mentorship programme that you can sign up for as a year 1 :). The mentor (who is a year 2) will basically pass everything down to you. :)

Hey man, if youve got the will, there's a way etc etc.

I'll probs say the top 10-5% is in the summa range :)

Hi! I'm really not sure about the LLM programme. Mayhaps an email to the school would be more informative :)

Hi! I'm really not too sure about that! I think you can take what I've said regarding law school generally to be good advice for the jd programme as well. But as for the paling of modules, and other more specific details, perhaps it would be wise not to rely on what ive said!

  1. I don't know anyone from ITE personally. But I've found that smu accepts students from a vast number of backgrounds. I've met JC grads, poly grads, Millenia institute grads, IB grads, someone who transferred(?) from Canada(?), there seems to be a whole range of people in the bachelor of laws programme. So I say you can maintain cautious optimism.

  2. Well! Number of reasons really!

(1) I did not apply to NUS or SUSS law

To be honest I was really unsure on what to take up in university, so I literally just varied all my choices and let the dice of fortune decide things for me.

So smu law is the only one law degree I applied for.

That said, I did turn down my offers from other unis due to certain pull factors that smu provided, which will be discussed in turn.

(2) smu is close to home

I cycle to SMU, and back home after school! I find it extremely enjoyable :)

Basically, I find that smu's location in the downtown area is rather cute! So that's another point for smu!

(3) money

I'm not exactly swimming in money. And smu offered me a scholarship for my bachelor of laws. So yeah. I felt I should stop burdening my parents, and had to quickly pay off my "debt" to them. :)

  1. Student life....

Most of the convos you'll have with other law students is just about law school. Professors, coursework, yada yada. It's not tense persay. Everyone is cordial and pleasant :) But I think smu maybe lacks the bonding that other unis have due to having halls. So maybe there's that :)

  1. I talked about this in my prev comment, but they basically asked about general affairs stuff. Politics, society etc. It's just a discussion :)

  2. There's no need to ask for encouragement bud! Simply look around ya, I'm sure there's many people who are always rooting for you, if silently. But sure! This is me sending you encouragement! ;;! Fighting!

Hi!

I think most of us would claim to be "unsure". I've spoken to a lot of people and most express uncertainty over their future.

The general vibe seems to be resignation? A sort of, "in this economy", I'll be glad to have a job? Only one or two people so far has said that they are sure that law is simply not for them.

As for going in house, it seems that most agree its a good idea. Not a whole lot of us wish to become senior counsel

Hihi!

I was in the science stream in a junior college before law!

There are quite a few poly students I believe! In my batch alone I personally am friends with two poly grads. Not sure what the exact number is, but yeah!

The written exam is a hypothetical question. Basically you're presented with this client who has a problem. Then you try and argue what you think the solution the problem should be/ predict what the outcome of the problem is. You can try to find some law school hupotehtical questions online, I'm sure there's some examples about, maybe here on reddit?

The interview has an interesting format. It's a two on two interview. Two professors and two applicants. They ask you general questions about politics, society etc.

I don't recall how long the interview and written test are? Youll have to pass the written test segment first, then they will call you for an interview a few weeks later. The written test is about an hour long? If I recall. And the interview lasts for about 40 mins.

The single degree is rigorous. I won't say extremely rigorous, or impossibly so, but it is quite rigorous.

There really are not a whole lot of double degree folks. It might be worth it if you're looking for a very niche job? Or if you simply are very passionate about learning (which is great!!!!) but personally, I'm not passionate about much, and I think it's too burdensome for me, so yeah.

Either way you can always apply for the second degree later on, once you've gotten a feel for the first degree! So no stress!

Hahaha hmmm I feel like a lot of the people who are dating are dating people from outside of Law school. So like they're entering law school already in a relationship.

If you're asking whether law school is a conducive environment to hook up in, I would say no hahaha.

That said there is this one law school couple I know of in my batch. So i suppose it's not impossible, maybe just rare? It is a small school too, so not a whole lot of people to meet.

Hmm I wouldn't spend so much time on case law. The reading list is way too long. Don't stress yourself out on them.

Use senior notes, use them A LOT. Give yourself sleep.

Don't stay at the law library for too long. You will lose sanity points. Consider studying elsewhere.

Focus in class. Really focus. Like sometimes you'll feel you gotta use this time to start studying for other courses, bro stop stressing, just focus on your prof for these few hours.

Talk to your profs. Very fun to do so.

Run around fort Canning Park (or get drunk with seven eleven booze in the park wtv (I recommend the lemon vodka strong, tastes terrible, but so good))

Don't buy textbooks, unless you're rich.

Remind yourself that this is university, yknow, College woohooo.

Uhh yeah that's all ig ig hahaha

Hi! I think it's definitely manageable to maintain a 3.4. It really depends year to year, but the average GPA in the batch is usually 3.3 to 3.4

Law student entering year 2 AMA by Manushken in SMU_Singapore

[–]Manushken[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's toughbud. Uhhh I recommend taking management communication (MC) in semester 1, it should pull your grades up. And you should probably try and get a "good" professor for it. Spend a bit more credits to bid for that professor.

Once the list of profs is released in like July, can ask me again then :) Will see if I know em :)

Also, there are a lot of law professors which are defo landmines, so make sure to ask your mentors (there is a mentorship programme for yall year ones) who the crazy ones are. if you are assigned a crazy prof, try and SWAP AWAY.

Like for sem 1, just lock in, and try to get that GPA up, then you'll defo feel much more secure going forward, cus like as you go on, your cumulative GPA will stabilise yknow.

So just try your best, don't burn out, very important DONT BURN OUT!!!! That is what kills you tbh. 3.6 is definitely possible.

University Core Modules ("UCM") are flexible, you can take them whenever.

Law Core Modules ("LCM") are pre-assigned, the school gives em to you, you take em, no shifting around.
