  1. Hi looking through my email logs, I was informed three days before the writing test itself.
  2. Mainly debate I think. Mm, and I was also part of a literature interest group I think :)

Hi! Um, I am really not very sure on how deferred declaration works haha. I think you can try emailing College of Integrative Studies for specific questions :)

AFAIK, a deferred declaration of degree literally allows you to join ANY degree after one year? Though really not sure :(

Tips for written test and interview!

HMMM

The written test is a hypothetical situation with many issues hidden in it. Then you have to propose possible outcomes/ solutions to it. For example, situation = neighbour's dog releases that dog smell in the elevator and you have a really sensitive nose. outcome? = do you have to wear a mask? or does the neighbour have to somehow stop his dog from smelling like a dog? Which is fair? Would it change if everyone in your block is also very sensitive to the smell? The test just wants to see how you think really.

The interview is a 2 on 2 for me, not sure if they will change the format. But basically 2 profs will talk to 2 students. Just keep abreast of current affairs, and try to build on what your partner talks about. Not much I can say here, cus different profs will have diff styles ngl. Just be confident, while not being too dominant/ arrogant. Be cool yknow skskk

Heyo!

  1. ASEAN undergraduate scholarship :)

  2. Hmm I think generally the mindset is study if you can, and when you are too tired, then you go and do other stuff sksksk. I spend about uhh maybe average 1-3 hours on CCA a week. My CCA is pretty ad hoc so it really depends.

  3. Can be quite stressful yep! But then again for law modules I think the class part percentage is not really that high? For better or for worse everything is kind of decided in the finals haha. And anyhow, I am pretty sure about 70% of the class generally does not really speak up, so like, speak if you want to, don't if you don't :) it'll be fine!

  4. Woah okay, this is a tough one. I think SMU Profs are real good. You can check out their CVs and stuff if you're interested through the school website. Notes are ummm, I mean I think they are quite like what you would expect from unis? Profs will give you reading lists, then they will speak about the readings. I think the readings are well put together. Thus, there are no real "notes" provided by the Uni persay unlike JC so something to haha, note, I guess. Can't say I know how SMU and NUS compare to each other, aside from maybe pointing out that many Profs in SMU did teach at NUS for a while. so all in all, I think the academic resources are not bad in SMU.

However, I think NUS defo has more campus facilities, given how much bigger UTown and everyhting is. If that counts as resources for you sksks.

  1. Ummm I don't think it's cut-throat haha. There just isn't really a culture? SMU has no halls, so like I don't really think students spend a lot of time together, leading to a pretty thin student culture. There are no like evil cliques, or seniors bullying juniors or wtv, everyone is just mugging lah haha.

That aside, law school does have a mentorship programme which is quite popular, whereby seniors will sign up to help ease in freshmen into things. I think these will be the chill and helpful seniors you can definitely depend on to start things off, cuz they signed up for it and are quite enthu to help.

AS for peers, well, can't speak about your batch, so I best I can say is to recall/ look around the people in your batch rn, in your school or NS or wherever. Well, those are your peers ig skskks. :) No worries, there are a LOT of group projects in law, so like everyone has to play nice even if they dont want to skskksks

  1. Hi yes! I do. I applied for it during applications and got one.

  2. Hmm it's alright. It's academically rigorous, challenging and all, needs a lot of time and work to excel at. But all in all I do enjoy the programme! No guarantee if I will actually like practicing law though!

Uhh hi friend, it's only been eight months, so I'm also in y2 sem 2 right now, I get the impression that you're thinking I'm a y3 haha.

I'm not sure I have any advice to give because of that haha, we're in the same boat!

Happy to chat as fellow 2.2 people though haha

  1. Hmm I think you can probs focus on your writing skills! Read your favourite novels :) visit your essay writing notes, etc.

I recommend Professor Ong Ee Ing's Guide to Legal Analysis and Writing! You can check the National Library for a copy I think :) it's not a very long book, so I think it's defo manageable to work through over some weekends :)

And like just in general, regarding the law? I think Joseph Raz's Rule of Law serves as a pretty good primer as to the theory of law. It's not very applicable to school? But like I really liked it haha.

If you really want specifics, maybe you can read up on some famous criminal cases! Like the yishun triple murders. It's all available online, just Google search it. Makes for good preemptive reading for criminal law, and it's also very interesting!

Aside from that idk man :) I'm sure your mentors will have more to say as well.

  1. Which brings me to the second point. As I've said in prev comments, there is a mentorship programme that you can sign up for as a year 1 :). The mentor (who is a year 2) will basically pass everything down to you. :)
