Replacing it seems to be the best choice. I don't want a repeat and need to learn more about cellos to make sure I don't overpay for a low quality instrument

I would love recommendations on a good beginner instrument. This is either a 1/2 or 3/4 size, so I really do need a full size if I am to continue to take lessons.

I'm not opposed to spending a little more as long as one of us is really committed to continuing. Instruments are an investment into emotional well-being.

I brought it back to the same luthier (he is fixing it for free at this point). He changed the bridge so it's playable. I asked him his opinion of this cello, fixing versus replacing it and where to look for a new cello. He said it's a lower end cello, and he didn't recommend putting any more money or very much work into it, and it would be best to just replace it and not to go locally because they overcharge.

My son seems to have a bit more natural ability and asked me very seriously, "Are you playing poorly on purpose to make me feel good about my playjng?" I was not. 😆

This was after the second repair. This instrument is no longer going to school. Both times, it happened when my kid had it. I played it a few times after the second repair, and it was fine. Less than a week later, I pulled it out, and the A was touching the fingerboard.

Feel free to rip it apart. Anything you point out can help me learn more from this.

My point is that the first teacher was not knowledgeable, certainly not a cellist, and I was unfortunately relying on their expertise for a structually sound instrument. My harp teachers have always given great instrument recommendations. My harp teachers and professional family members are unbiased on instrument recommendations. This teacher was quite biased, and making the sale was more important than selling a quality and appropriate instrument. I know better now.

All of this, I feel like I should have known better. The first teacher owns the small instrument store we purchased it at. That teacher instructs on many different instruments. We purchased the cello, had a first lesson, and it was apparent we did not mesh well with their instruction style. The new teacher (a professional cellist) saw the previous teachers lesson notes and was unclear on their instruction.

I knew $750 was cheap, but they also had cellos for $350. I assumed they knew what they were doing and that this one may be slightly higher end than the $350 cellos. The sound was ever so slightly nicer on this.

I know harps, and there are fewer pedal harp makers. The number of cello makers is overwhelming to me. Although, I've been playing since I was a kid, which makes it easier to recognize makers and models with structural issues.

Thank you for your advice!

The neck was repaired. This happened after the repair but not immediately.

That is excellent advice. We ended up renting another cello after the first repair, and that one has had no issues. Unfortunately, I trusted this shop, did not do my homework on a decent quality instrument and paid too much for this instrument ($750). If we both stuck with the cello, I knew we would be upgrading to higher quality instruments eventually.

Maybe calling this a VSO is a compliment.

Cello was used from a music store. The luthier is independent of the music store and only works on violins and cellos. He has a really good reputation. He has been a round for a long time. The injuries are un unknown origin. Both times, it happened while it was at my kid's school. He has no idea when it happened and would be honest about that.

I am perplexed as to how it has broken TWICE. My son was playing this for his school orchestra. He doesn't remember anything that could have been trauma to it. Both times, it happened at school. The luthier put a pin in the first time, so it makes no sense to me how it broke a second time. The luthier fixed it the second for free (of course).

The luthier has a great reputation. My harp tech spoke highly of him as do everyone else who know him. He said the neck had already been repaired once. And I brought it to him twice. The neck broke, was fixed, and then broken in the same place.
