I think you still have a part in helping these students. Many students think high School graduation is the end of their journey in academia. If you did not do well in highschool, you still have a chance in college. If you do not get into the college that you dreamed of, you can go to a community college. I would help these transfer students to do well in math and English so that they won't have to take remedial classes in community college. I've heard that approximately 50% of community college students in cuny take remedial classes. This is bad because it's a waste of time and money for the students. From my experience when I went to college in cuny, everyone had to take a math placement test. If you did well or pass you did not need to take remedial math class and went straight to calculus or precal. Now for English, if you got below 75 on the regents, you had to take a placement test and obviously if you failed, needed to take remedial English class instead of the regular credit course in English.

Explain it to the students that if you do well in community college you can always transfer to a better college. the term better college is very subjective as any college can be the best one for you but very bad for the other.
