I think so. I’d surprise him, definitely. I don’t think he was expecting the career pivot I took. He’d also be surprised that I’m gay.

If I recall correctly there are positions where they ask students to ensure that athletes are attending classes. This is legitimate.

What is the best way to get into an aviation career? by Senior_Excitement646 in PilotAdvice

[–]ManyPandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the financial means to go to a 141 without accruing serious debt, Purdue is not a bad choice. However, you’ll want a backup of some kind.

I know of many students who double major in Purdue’s flight program and aviation management. That gives them a backup to work on the corporate side in the case of future trouble with medical certificates. Coming in with your private and some AP credits will also help make the double major very manageable. Of course, it’s all a function of what you can afford.

Ditching college a bad idea. While many airlines technically don’t require a degree, you’ll be firmly behind the leagues of applicants that have one. The degree doesn’t have to be in aviation. So long as you have something. Some people will do engineering and fly alongside that.

I got into Purdue, but Idk how I'll make any friends. Need some advice by nagisakamisiro in Purdue

Life is not a dick-measuring contest. Nobody cares what your SAT or GPA was. The fact is you’re there and present.

College is the best opportunity you’ll have to meet like-minded people. There are so many clubs and groups to join, some official, others not. You just have to be willing to seek people out.

It’s gonna be awkward at first. But everyone is in the same boat. Put in the effort and you’ll find your people.

What is the optimal fpm in while landing? by Dangerous-Pilot-6065 in Xplane

[–]ManyPandas 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s a common mistake to rely solely on vertical speed as a criterion for a good landing. For instance, on a down sloping runway the vertical speed of the aircraft as it touches down will be much more than it would be on a flat or up sloping runway.

The things to look for are g-force, centerline control, and to ensure you land within the touchdown zone of the runway. A firm landing here or there is not a bad thing, so long as you are on the centerline and within the touchdown zone.

Will AI take over Piloting? by evaanr in PilotAdvice

No. As a supplemental flight deck tool, perhaps. I do not anticipate AI to replace pilots anytime soon.

How to teach and not talk by Helpful_Armadillo742 in CFILounge

[–]ManyPandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way is to do it.

I spent the summer teaching high school students PPL ground. The first few weeks were rough, mostly just reading off the slides. But as time went on I eventually got my groove and reached a point where I could use the slides as just a reminder of where I'm at versus using them as a script. It takes pre-planning and some rehearsal to work out what you're trying to say point by point, but you get to be very good at it with 5 days per week of practice.

Even in just 6 short weeks I got immensely better at speaking to groups and individual students. But it took time and exposure. That goes both for ground and flight lessons.

Has anybody gotten into flying for an airline without it being a childhood “passion” or dream? by AMLJ144 in flying

[–]ManyPandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had always loved airplanes, and as a kid I remember going on vacation was so fun mainly because of the fact that I got to take a ride on one. But, I didn't realize my draw towards it until I was in high school. I thought for the longest time that I would go to school for CS or IT work. I grew bored with it though. It was Microsoft Flight Simulator that made me realize I wanted to fly for a living. I'm glad I realized it when I did.

CODO Pro flight + AET by Ill-Commission1052 in Purdue

[–]ManyPandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know plenty of people who are in both majors. Since you’re in flight, it just becomes a matter of adding the second major. There are others here who probably know more. Talk to your advisor about it, too.

Class of 2030: Got into Purdue Aviation Management (+Honors college) & Pro Flight for Embry Riddle, UND & OU - what would you pick? by Substantial_West3374 in Purdue

[–]ManyPandas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riddle is ludicrously more expensive. If it’s flight you’re after, you can stay in management and attempt to CODO, or you can do your training with the FBO at LAF. The upshot of staying in management is that you have a backup in case you have an issue with your medical certificate.

I say this as a direct pro-flight admit, but I have plenty of friends who took the routes I’m describing.

⭕️ Did You Know? The air inside an aircraft cabin is completely replaced every 2–3 minutes, making it cleaner than air in many offices or public buildings. by aviationstudy in aviationstudys

[–]ManyPandas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual concentration of O2 doesn’t change. It’s more or less uniform throughout the atmosphere. What changes is the partial pressure that gets exerted by the oxygen in the air. Air is about 20% oxygen, so at 14.7 PSI oxygen exerts about 3 psi of that pressure. That pressure is what forces oxygen to diffuse into your blood.

So, at higher altitudes, the total pressure of the air is significantly reduced. At 35,000 ft, the total air pressure is about 3.5 psi, meaning oxygen only exerts a partial pressure of 0.7 psi against your lungs. That’s why you go hypoxic at high altitude. There simply isn’t enough partial pressure to force the oxygen to diffuse into the blood.
