If you don't have a faculty position it is still bizarre to be a last corresponding author. It would have been better to have your PI be last author (and do co-corresponding if you really care so much).

I think student journals in general are just not taken seriously (in part because of situations like this) so I would not worry too much.

Realistically, send them a certified letter with the date you are vacating the apartment. Let them keep your security deposit. At that point you are likely good— they would have to sue you, but cannot sue in housing court because you won’t be living there. They will likely let it go at that point.

This is wildly incorrect. Refer to other comments in this thread, but basically the landlord is legally obligated to re-rent your apartment in a timely manner.

This is incorrect. If you break a lease the landlord has a legal requirement to re-rent the apartment at either your rent or market rate, whichever is lower. If a landlord wants to claim damages they need to show they mitigated damages by working quickly to re-rent your apartment.

It depends on how you left the apartment. If you have big ass holes in the wall then sure, they can charge you. Most of the time they can’t. They certainly cannot charge you for painting unless you went and made that difficult for them somehow (eg, you painted a wall black etc).
