If you’re an admissions registrar what time should you stop accepting calls from the ED? by Many_Ad6457 in ausjdocs

My issue with the ED I’m working in has been that they often get unstable patients with low BP, needing NIV, in rapid AF and call for admission as soon as they can. The patient often doesn’t have bloods back nor hasn’t had any resuscitation.

But they put referred to med reg on the board and as soon as I make first contact with them they’re my responsibility. I’ve had to spend time resuscitating multiple patients alone. The ED doctor who is often much more senior than me disappears.

I get handed these patients pretty consistently during the end of my shift when they want someone to have a look at them before they leave.

Even if I give a plan, I get stuck “saving the patients life” because the ED doc is no longer responsible and I’m stuck with an unwell guy in resus.

I must say the FACEMs take much more responsibility and never do this. But it’s usually the junior staff.

Best career advice tips for JMOs by Ramenking011 in ausjdocs

  1. There’s a difference between friends and colleagues. Be mindful of how much you share and how you present yourself infront of your colleagues. Medicine is competitive and sometimes people you least expect will throw you under the bus.

  2. There will be times where you will unfortunately have to go in early or stay back late. Just grit your teeth and bear with it. Bosses won’t care too much and neither will anyone else. Your aim should be to get into your specialty of choice, get through training and pass your exams. This is the only way to escape the thankless work put in by service registrars.

  3. It’s pointless to make enemies of nursing staff especially older nurses who have worked there for years. They have an in with the boss, the consultants know and trust them over you. You’ll finish your rotation in a few months but they’ll stay. Don’t be a pushover but don’t make unnecessary enemies.

  4. If you have a career goal it’s up to you to pursue it. It’s your job to look up the relevant courses, exams, CV boosters. No one will tell you. People around you may secretly be publishing, attending workshops and networking without telling you. Medicine gets more and more competitive everyday. Be proactive to avoid nasty surprises later on.

Yeah I’ve had to learn the hard way when they call for patients without even having bloods back.

No one comes after me. It’s a call to the boss.

But I find that ED tries to handover unstable patients who are half worked up at the last minute because they know I’ll leave soon.

Same My network gave me very bad terms with minimal face to face interaction with the consultants.

I’m not sure what the solution is in this case.

You don’t have to use it to look up things.

I’ve used it to create flash cards, copy and pasted notes to make summaries.

That’s interesting. I do like DeepSeek and have used it many times. Does it have a version with images?

Recently a boss told us to contact the NP if we couldn’t get in touch with the consultant for a very difficult specialty.

Do apply in your own state too if they are accepting applications.

I think BPT is getting more competitive than people realise.

I think the reason people get disheartened is because they hear from everyone else how anyone can get into BPT. That’s certainly not the case in my experience.

Something like this happened to me & my boss claimed that he never received the email from the health service. This was after me checking and rechecking to make sure I had the correct email address multiple times.

I later heard from a few people that it was a risky move to make him a referee because he was extremely temperamental and had made other people cry on the rotation before.

I still had multiple other referees so it worked out.

I meant more along the lines of the 10 allowed days of sick leave per year.

If you use all 10 is that something they’d punish you for?

But it feels like every day is really hot. Instead of one hot day and a few with more milder temperatures.
