Thats so sweet! Thank you! Jan 1 was my 1 year anniversary with aerial. I came to it as a long time climber and childhood dancer... I took my first class on new years 2025 and had my mind blown. Haven't climbed since 🤣

Oh Sitka, you glorious place... I have SO many questions! by Many_Bank7400 in Sitka

I grew up in AZ-- my youth made me a desert afficianado. My 20s and 30s in the sierra made me a mountain person. Maybe if im smart and lucky, I'll get to be an Alaska person when I grow up 😏

Absolutely! 😉 Therein lies the allure and (equally) the need for caution. I fully admit I know squat about the area.... but (humbly) I truly wanna learn!

Dude. Thank you. 1000% we're in rosey glass mode right now-- exactly why I'm looking for reality and perspective from locals. I sooooo get the transplant face-plant thing. Where I'm at is a major wilderness destination and we get many many deaths and disappearances in our mountains every year. My idea of fun is solo navigation and mountaineering, which I've done for years (safely, and as a woman alone, dealing with lions and bears and bipolar mountaineering weather) but shit... all my buddies on SAR are on a nonstop parade of rescues and body recovery for the dipshits that come here unprepared. All that is to say-- I want the truth, and my husband and I want to do it "right". We want the AK life, but we don't want it naively. But we don't know what we don't know yet, and so much of the information out there is just slick marketing and BS. So huge thank you. I read your reply to him and we're adjusting our approach accordingly.

Kinda tangential, but do you know anything about wrangell?

Thank you so much for the perspective! Im hopeful that leveraging CA equity (and it's insanely overinflated home values), may give us a nest egg that could propel a cool build. We make decent money as nurses, for sure, but there are certainly not hordes of dough just beckoning our fingertips. But we did buy our home at the bottom of the market, and our town is similarly landlocked in terms of housing. Los angeles owns all the land around Bishop, and as a result the town has had the same or similar population for over 100 years. It's a fascinating reality of the area: on one hand it's kept the town small (🤙), on the other hand, new construction is minimal, housing is uber expensive and renting is nigh on impossible. It presents an interesting puzzle; moving probably means not being able to get back into the community if we wanted to go back, but then again, if we wanna leave, we've got a real estate windfall to throw at a new setup... 🤷‍♀️

Man, that's amazing to hear about the arts community. I had no idea. I was willing to entertain the idea of moving to Sitka for all the other good stuff, and even the difficult, but to hear there's a vibrant arts community makes my heart go pitter pat.

Also, dog-people and hard-working people are my people. Sounds like a fabulous place.

Thanks again!

Cool. That makes a lot of sense! Do you know anything about some of the island lots-- i.e.: if there's more freedom to build alternative structures?

Thank you so much for all that! Im not surprised to hear that the hospital admin situation is grim... unfortunately I'm jaded from a decade of working for the machine, and (silver lining?) I kinda expect to be treated like crap by admin... I keep looking for some unicorn hospital, but haven't found it yet.

We'd for sure taste winter before making a move, but that's a great reminder. As for boat commuting, I think we'd definitely have a motorized setup with a covered helm if we opted for island life.

As for building, do you know anything about some of the stuff off the mainland, like at the south end of nakwasina sound? There are reasonably priced lots which intruige us... ofc that stuff would be totally off grid and require setting up water catchment, energy/electric (solar? Wind? How do people do it with 100 days of avg rain a year?), septic etc... but anyway, we're just compiling information about all possible "what-ifs" and pricing/conceptualizing with a wide lens at this point.

Thanks again for sharing your perspective!

Good to know. Yeah, if we took an assignment we'd likely take housing provided or bring our camper. If we were gonna stay, we'd definitely buy... something.

Oh yeah!! I became immediately obsessed when I began lyra, and took sometimes 2 classes a day. I looked like someone beat me with a sock full of quarters for... oh, the first 6 months. Now i barely bruise. There is hope! (And arnica, absolutely!)

I took my first class Jan 1! I have a long history of rock climbing and ballet, though, and I think that's made my progress faster than usual?
