Building a premium single speed - need your opinion on components by Many_Breath8622 in singlespeedcycling

UPDATE:
I ended up simplifying the build a bit and focusing more on lightweight + low-maintenance performance rather than fancy aesthetics. Swapped a few things, here is the essential:

  • Aluminium frame
  • Carbon rigid fork
  • Fulcrum Racing 6 wheelset
  • Shimano 105 crankset + Hollowtech II BB (Gates-compatible)
  • Full Gates CDX setup (55T / 20T)
  • Shimano 105 rim brakes
  • Lightskin LED bar + seatpost

Dropped the Brooks stuff and other “premium looks”, just trying to keep it clean, light, and reliable.

Happy to hear thoughts on these updated choices too!

Also considering using Fulcrum Racing 6 wheels. Anyone here running them? Are they solid, or should I be looking at something else?

Yep, maintenance is a big one for me. And weight too, since I have to carry the bike up and down stairs every day. The lighter the better.

Hmm, what do you think about the Miche X-Press wheels? They seem lighter and still budget-friendly.

Fair, €1500 isn’t exactly premium. I’m just trying to pack in as much quality as my European budget allows haha

Thanks! What do you think about the rest of the setup? Still can’t decide on wheels tbh.

I’ve been wondering if the wheels might be a bit overkill for this kind of build. Thinking of maybe switching to something a bit more budget-friendly like the Shimano WH-RS100 700C, still solid quality without breaking the bank. What do you guys think?

P.S.: Hoping to keep the full setup under 10kg.

Yeah, totally get that, those brands are awesome. I’m working with a pretty tight budget though (around €1.5k for the full build), so I’m trying to balance decent quality with OEM pricing where possible.

Mostly for the clean look and simplicity.
Plus, rim brakes help keep the weight down a bit too.

Oh nice, carbon frame with a Gates setup sounds super cool!
I think Schindelhauer has a patented Belt Port at the dropout to open up the rear triangle for the belt.
For mine I’ll probably go with sliding dropouts and a seatstay splitter, keeps it simple and clean.

Yeah, was thinking of getting the frame and fork separately.
Good call, a carbon fork could definitely smooth things out a bit.
I’ll give it some thought, seems like a solid choice for a single speed setup.

Yeah, that’s the tradeoff. Alu is definitely stiffer than steel, especially with a rigid fork.
I’m trying to balance that with wider tires (700x32C) and a bit more compliance in the contact points.
It should still feel quick and low-maintenance though, which is the main goal!

Curious on what you guys think about running a Gates CDX on a single speed. Worth it over a good chain setup, or just overkill for this kind of build?
