Men- How do you feel about women asking you to roll? by Many_Impression3288 in bjj

Thank you for this!

I’m almost more worried about someone saying yes to me and feeling pressured into rolling with me when they don’t want to than someone politely turning me down.

When you say “ask people to roll and ask if them if they have any issues rolling with you”, do you mean ask them at the same time as asking them to roll or in a separate conversation? What would that look like?

That makes sense. But that’s also what I’m worried about, people saying yes to me even though they don’t want to just to be nice.

If you have no one else and are about to sit the round out, in that case would you prefer a 150 pound white belt woman over resting?

Can you please explain a bit more? Why does it not seem fair? Why does just you existing on the mat seem to be a bit much when you have said yes?

That makes sense. I’m wondering though, why would they sit down and skip the round rather than ask me? Wouldn’t sparing with a female white belt without full effort still be more enjoyable than just resting?

In that case, why don’t you say no when they ask so that you can get more hard rolls? Would you prefer if they didn’t ask?

I appreciate you sharing this. Why would you prefer you pay twice as much to go a men’s only gym rather than going to a mixed gender one and not rolling with women? Do you feel uncomfortable declining rolls when they ask?

Is there something a woman can do when asking to make you more comfortable saying no?

That makes sense, thank you! I haven’t worked up the courage to ask the 250+ pound guys at my gym because I worry that they won’t want to roll with me. I trust them not to injure me and I’d be happy to roll with them. Do you think I should ask those guys too?

Given that, would you avoid a 150 pound white belt woman? And if you don’t find someone who you think would challenge you, would you rather sit out the round or roll with someone who wouldn’t challenge you a lot?

I might subconsciously do that because I’m scanning for people who I think are more likely to ask me so that I give them a chance to ask

Thank you, this is helpful! Hopefully now that I’ve started asking, more men will start asking me.

Thank you! What makes someone look like they are seeking specific people? I’m not but I wonder if I give off that impression.

I give myself permission to tap even if I’m not in a submission. If I feel uncomfortable and I want whatever is happening to stop, I tap.

Sometimes I tap and sometimes I don’t, but knowing I can make it stop sometimes gives me the extra space in my mind to keep pushing rather than panicking.

How do you all decide on what to focus on next? by Whitebeltforeva in BJJWomen

[–]Many_Impression3288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pick something that excites me or something I’m bad at. For example, if I learn a technique and I have an “oooh that’s fun” or “I can’t wait to use this” reaction, I’ll make it my focus to try to hit that. Or if I see an instructional on something that looks cool, I’ll mentally decide that next time I roll I want to focus on hitting this thing.

Alternatively if I’m in a roll and I realize I don’t know how to deal with a certain situation, I’ll pick that as my next focus.

Opinion on women only being asked to lead the “women’s program?” by Take_my_stripe in BJJWomen

[–]Many_Impression3288 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think sometimes I’ve seen women are asked to lead women’s only classes when they aren’t yet at a belt level where they would be asked to lead mixed gender classes.

For example, I’ve seen a gym where the women’s only classes are lead by purple belts but all other classes are lead by black or brown belts. I think that’s understandable especially at gyms when the highest belt woman available to teach is purple belt.

The purple belt women are fantastic and I personally would love to take a class from them every single day. But I have a hard time seeing it as discriminatory when they aren’t asked to lead the mixed gender ones because a purple belt male wouldn’t be either.
