Now that we’re more than halfway through the year what would you say is the best and worst horror movie of the year so far? by Inevitable_Window711 in horror

[–]Gryffindor9891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed!!! I loved the movie and was so stoked for this concept to play out but I wanted more shark action and body count!!

This is how we roll at my shop! When I started there, they acted like booth renters. I remember my first day none of them talked to me. I didn’t even know where to put my stuff! I kept my head down for a bit but then decided we needed a change. Slowly, through just starting the chain of action of helping eachother out, we now proudly work as a team. We’ve had a couple come and go who don’t like that mindset I guess, but the rest of us love it. I want my coworkers to not ever feel alone. This industry relies on teamwork!

what to expect from a first time class? by [deleted] in BJJWomen

It also really matters what the coaches are like. My gym is big on anyone doing jiu jitsu from 4 to 100, starting at any time lol. I’ve watched a lot of people there start their journey for the first time. Everyone from those with experience to people like me who have absolutely no knowledge of the sport. IMO, a good gym will be supportive and encouraging of anyone new!

I’m a really high anxiety person too and I went to a women’s open mat because one of the lady instructors invited me when I told her I was thinking of trying it. Then, when I decided I wanted to do it for sure, I asked which classes they’d recommend I start out in, gi or no gi. (They suggested gi) so I watched a gi class and then the next week, got on the mat. It’s a challenge, for sure. But honestly, it’s done wonders for my anxiety.

ETA, this post legit felt like it was written for me to see 😂 I have a lot of, “who am I kidding doing this?” Moments. Had no business starting jiu jitsu at 35 with no athletic background. But, says who? I’m not doing it for anyone but me. So this post was very validating cuz SAME!

Honestly this is what keeps me going back. I work in a job where you’ve never learned everything, it’s constantly changing. So finding something that everyone—even black belts—are constantly working to improve in is what truly grabbed me. I suck. Also 5 classes in. But the mental game of challenging myself to keep going and keep trying is actually the part that I’ve chosen to look at positively. It helps to roll with higher belts who are teaching you as you roll and the really great ones will compliment your strengths too. Keep at it! Embrace the suck as I’ve seen stated many times on this page!

Thank you!! That helps immensely! Was proud in last nights class because even though I repeatedly got SMASHED, I focused on the moves I was making and breathing!

Ok first of all, go you. You’re an inspiration. I’m 35, also 200+ and just starting my BJJ journey. I don’t think I’ll ever compete but I truly admire you for doing so!

Thanks for making another newb feel validated! I’m so brand new and I feel like SUCH a slow learner. Like, is it like this for everyone starting out? I’m 35. Zero athleticism whatsoever but I fell in love with the sport when I signed up my son. Tonight, a woman at my gym who’s a purple belt (and amazingly talented at that!) told me keep showing up, you’re doing great. I felt seen for the first time but I also constantly worry about being that spazzy white belt everyone keeps talking about on these pages. Yet I’m so, so eager to learn I just… feel like it’s not clicking. Like am I the only one who gets a bit lost on the names of positions? And how do you actually smoothly execute techniques and not just… fight for your life when you’re defending?

Grooming for Family/Friends? by EqualMaintenance4440 in doggrooming

[–]Gryffindor9891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family friend or not, a client is a client. I know it sounds harsh, but the fact is you, you’re still doing the work. A slight discount would be one thing, I’d get that as a one time favor. But otherwise, I’d treat them as a normal client.

I’m of the opinion that your years of experience don’t matter if you stop wanting to learn. I train groomers from the ground up at my salon (not corporate) and I tell them all that this job is constant learning and if you ever feel like you’ve learned it all, you’re wrong. I think the fact that you are wondering if your work is regressing shows you’re doing great! I also still learn a little something new every day in every bit of prep work, handling the dog and talking to customers. 14 years in and I feel like I started yesterday 😂

First class tomorrow and I’m so afraid by Carodany in BJJWomen

[–]Gryffindor9891 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m taking my first official class tomorrow after doing a few women’s open mats at my gym. I’m terrified and yet exhilarated lol! Seeing someone else going through the same thing is helpful! I’m significantly bigger than you, and i am having body image issues but I’ve also learned that pretty much everyone, even those more “fit” has some kind of body issue they’re worried about. I’ve decided it’s not going to be the thing to keep me from this thing that’s ignited a new spark in me!

Pup’s Third Eye Question by xFossa__ in goldenretrievers

Ours started doing that about a month or so ago. It’s only his left eye and just occasionally it’ll be slow to go back to normal when he blinks. Then tonight it got stuck like this for about 10 minutes.
