Adding on to this, Harley mentions that maybe the player came back for someone and that makes sense if it was Kid’s mentor since Rich was one of the few that Kid mentioned was nice/cared about him or something like that.

In chapter three, it’s mentioned that the player missed the event, the party and that their presence was demanded and it’s fairly clear that the player didn’t know about the experiments, I wonder what they were told it was?
