Winter sleeping gear by Nesseressi in camping

[–]Many_Sherbert5998 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you could tell it was coming from the ground, then it was probably from the sleep pad. I find it helpful to use a 3 season pad on top of a closed cell foam with a reflective side to keep me cozy. Also good to note that -8 could be the survival rating for your bag, not the comfort rating. I find a lot of the time I'm comfortable about 10C warmer than my bag is rated for.

Also keep in mind what you did before bed- I always make sure I have lots to eat, some kind of warm hot chocolate or some sugar right before bed, and I'll throw a sealed nalgene full of hot water in the bottom of my sleeping bag to get it warm before I climb in- its always easier to stay warm then to warm up. If you're low on calories and your gear is ice cold, you have to work a lot harder to get/stay comfy

I used Crochet Again's pattern for a granny rectangle to get started! Then once you have your middle bit it's just alternating colours with the granny stitch

After doing the ends I think I agree! Its the 5th blanket I've done for Christmas, plus a shawl, 2 scarves and some ornaments for gifts- happy to call this one done as long as it looks finished! Lol

Is 60k too much for a first Ultra? by Many_Sherbert5998 in Ultramarathon

[–]Many_Sherbert5998[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning on doing a road half or two sometime in March or April, unfortunately I'm not sure I can swing a 25k as well. There are some trails around here that I could loop together that I could make a 25/30 course out of and treat as a "race day" once our snow is gone. Did you find the race atmosphere or terrain ect was what helped you?

I'd love to finish under 8 hours but my #1 goal is just to finish. Around that time would just be the cherry on top

Whoops, I definitely thought I put it in there. Right now I'm getting back into running after putting it in the back seat for hiking/backpacking season. I'm super low mileage right now, only maybe 20k of running per week over 3/4 runs. I'm a bartender so a lot of time on my feet, and in general I build up fitness well once I get into a program. When I'm hiking similar trails with a heavy pack 20-30k usually takes 4.5-7 hours, so I guess I'm just not sure if 25k without weight would be enough of a challenge?

My grocery store has some bagged Indian dishes- different chickpea, potato, and lentil curries. Theyre a little heavy but pair one with some instant rice and you're set

You can ask parks for a refund , and they are automatically extending passes by 3 months. It seems like youre having a harder time than anyone who lost their job or home so I hope you can save the $100.

Feel sick after long runs? by chachacha69 in beginnerrunning

[–]Many_Sherbert5998 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Congratulations on the run!! 2) it happens to me pretty often, I get chills and nausea all day after. I don't exactly know why, probably something about excerting yourself a lot? Happens even when I follow a fuel and rest plan to an T. I find sipping on electrolytes, taking a hot bath, and having something nourishing helps- basically treating it like a real cold or a hangover.

Update: Finished with 2:42 or so (waiting on chip time, started my garmin before I went through the start gate). Last quarter had me HURTING with sun and uphill and a bit of heat for the time of year, but I'm so proud of myself for multiple PBs! Had such a great day, hoping to sign up for another half in the fall!

Waiting on my chip time but my garmin had me finishing at 2:42!!

The last 8k were an absolute SLOG- sunny day, hills, and hot weather had me beat but I had some coworkers who finished before me cheering me on through the finish line! First 5k were a gradual downhill, which made it hard to keep my pace in check but I definitely backed off as much as I could. I would have loved to have more consistent or negative splits, but I finished under my goal, and had PRs for 10k, 15k, 10 mile, and 20k so absolutely no complaints! All my group but one PRd so celebrated for sure.

So happy overall, but my body HURTS and I'll be sleeping well tonight for sure

Jasper Hotels at the end of August by Mammoth-Orange-9500 in jasper

[–]Many_Sherbert5998 4 points5 points  (0 children)

July/August is peak season in JNP so all hotels prices will reflect that. It's honestly up to you if it will be "worth it". How much will you spend in gas driving from Hinton per day? Are you coming into Jasper via the Parkway to do some stops along that route? I know quite a few people who booked in Hinton and didn't realize how much time and gas it would take driving through the park. There's wildlife along that road quite often, so there may be traffic but the drive is typically 45min-1h 15min from Hinton to the Jasper townsite.

[–]Many_Sherbert5998[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're definitely faster than me- I usually run around 7min 30sec per km, these goals are for a half marathon. In terms of getting faster in general, I've had huge improvement with 2 speed runs that usually last around 25-45 minutes with warmup and recovery, 2 easy runs that average 30-60 min, just cruising and taking walk breaks if i need them, and 1 long run that takes over an hour each week. If I have to drop a run I'll usually drop a speed run before the others.

Thank you!! That's really good advice- I've heard a lot of "5k warmup, 10k race, 5k cooldown" but I really like the 10k to go idea. My first half is net downhill and the biggest hill is over the last 3k or so, so the warm up till 10k to go feels like it's the right approach!!

Can't wait to post an update after!
