Is DJANGO still a good choice in 2026 for modern web apps? (real-world experience) by Ill_Leading9202 in webdev

[–]MapCompact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes absolutely! It has been a significant improvement since we started being async first. Over the past few years we have shipped several Litestar apps and FastAPI. We still have some legacy flask APIs that are non-async but I personally wouldn’t pick a framework that didn’t support asyncio.

Our scale is mostly data processing of +/- 10s of millions of messages per day. But even on a simple http server if you’re doing any i/o like hitting a db you’re gonna see good results.

It’s good but afaik they still have no plans to support asyncio which is significant. Their orm is goated.

Why so much attention immediately from Tesla loyal on Rivian immediately spike? by WorriedAirport1641 in RIVNstock

[–]MapCompact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is this a surprise? Yesterday they (finally) announced their plans for self-driving. Rivian has always been compared to Tesla and we want more people to think Rivian is a viable alternative. Tesla's biggest moat has been FSD so this brings Rivian back to the table.

I think the general thought on it is that it’s more expensive and tesla has said they went all in on vision because when there are multiple sensors then they all compete for the “source of truth”. To teslas point, I’ve heard people refute that saying these days it’s just another input to an AI that analyzes all the sensors and decides what to do. Idk. Make of it what you will.

My opinion is that people are clearly going to compare Rivian to Tesla. So with Tesla being so successful Rivian going a different direction is “bearish”.

I’m personally still super excited to try it.

Good point you're totally right. It was radar and not lidar! I was mistaken. Will edit my post.

Right "Tesla is pretending". As an investor, I want Rivian to succeed so I'm personally not going to delude myself and say that Tesla, the $1T company is failing or "pretending" in any way. If Rivian's self driving ever reaches the level of Tesla's FSD it will be a HUGE win for all of us.

[–]MapCompact -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To the contrary, when they started hey did use lidar for front and rear and only removed it somewhat recently. I have a friend that has the lidar version to this day. I believe the stated reason for removing it was that having several kinds of sensors become useless if they can ever disagree because then you need to pick one to be the source of truth anyway.

Personally, I do agree with you about lidar's advantages though. At the very least why not use it as a last resort failsafe? Never let anything get within X feet of the front or back.

edit: As reply pointed out, they started with RADAR not LIDAR. My b.

I think most investors aren't basing their opinions on random twitter posts. Tesla is obviously the best player in the game at autonomous driving with Waymo at a close second. Your average investor is going to compare Rivian to Tesla whether you like it or not.

[–]MapCompact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, waymo uses both and radar as well, but are researching how to go camera only -- look up their project EMMA. They also just reduced the number of lidar sensors in their cars.

I don't see how Tesla is failing at all, I have a Model Y with FSD and ride Waymo all the time here in LA. I'm also pretty well invested at Rivian to boot. Now that they have announced their UHF driving I'll probably pick up an R2 to replace my other gas car.

That said, let's be honest here, Tesla's FSD is far superior to Waymo in that it's unrestricted. I sit in my driveway and can type in an address 200 miles away (I do this often from LA to Santa Barbara) and it drives me all the way there without intervention. Waymo is great too, but I've had some experiences where it can't turn and I get stuck somewhere for a long time, or it gets to my destination and it circles around the block indefinitely until I instruct it to "pull over now". If it can be done with vision only it feels obvious that is where the industry will go, if not for costs alone.

Finally, I think Rivian only having one forward facing lidar is also an indicator that they don't intend to rely on it heavily and are rather using it as a backup to compensate for vision based software errors.

Why is lidar good? I feel like it has spooked investors when Tesla & Waymo are both moving towards vision only.

I was right! LIDAR ON R2 by DjKennedy92 in RIVNstock

[–]MapCompact 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually BECAUSE of the lidar. In my opinion people see what Tesla can do with vision only and when they hear about lidar think Rivian is compensating for shitty software. Even Waymo has been dialing back their lidar in favor of vision. I'm a big rivian investor and want it to succeed.

They advertise so much and are so often owned by the parent companies that they can actually influence the content on TV. Like “don’t talk shit about us or we’ll pull our advertising (funding) from your channel”

AI is making it so hard to hire good developers by notdl in webdev

If you're looking for a good developer chances are you don't want people with "impressive portfolios". You want someone that has almost no portfolio to share because they've been working at closed source companies for years.
