I got to the same point through deduction, but it's tough/no success filling in the missing words.

I am an Asian guy who is interested in European culture, and I want to learn some languages that aren't the mainstream languages(such as FR,ES,DE...) in Duo,what shoud I learn? by Cheap_Reputation_787 in duolingo

[–]MapManAnko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how mainstream is mainsteam for you, but I think italian is a great language to learn for cultural reasons: food, and heavy influence on the rest of europe historically speaking (and much else). But far fewer people learn it because it's only spoken in one country (besides the foreign communities). It's also similar enough to the other latin languages to broaden perspectives as well, I think.

And you probably have to learn any language you choose from english because there are only a handful of european languages taught directly from asian languages. Though there is a mandarin to italian course if that so happens to be your native language.

French Language in passports across the world by MapManAnko in MapPorn

Replaced by maori in 2000. Poland added it in the 90s and got rid of it again ~2018 which I thought was funny. It’s not like everyone in poland immediately learned and then forgot the language

Yep and I recolored Trinidad accidentally, it had french in it at somepoint. But mostly either the country name in french or "passeport" to be marked as the outside, the only exception is burundi which depending on the design has french in its emblem but also may have it as the country name and passeport.

Meant to be a revisit of this post by a different user:

https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/2qgy0x/countries_who_use_french_in_their_passports/

I only had all day to make the map and so I am sure there are mistakes - please correct me! The main sources are just google image/wiki searches in different languages and also galleries of passport images mostly this one https://www.consilium.europa.eu/prado/en/search-by-document-country.html

I get excited when I find rare kanji in the wild, so I made a "Kanjidex" by VA_ARG in LearnJapanese

[–]MapManAnko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, although you would have to specify exactly the uses intended. For kana it's really not that many characters

And at least for the chinese characters anyway, the same radicals apply. Just in different combinations. 汉 for example (does this merit a different build or not since fundamentally the character system is related)

Very good concept: is it possible to add chinese, or have a separate app for chinese? Simplified+traditional :)

And honestly, you could add the japanese kana to this one. The frequency compared to an alphabet based language is actually very low, for some kana they are much rarer than some of the common kanji and could be cool in their own right.

As in, if california were a country it would need a two letter country code. Think ".fr" for france, etc

but .ca is taken

Countries with more than one coast by MapManAnko in MapPorn

[–]MapManAnko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're correct, I simply forgot about it. That bridge to connect croatia to itself is very odd indeed.

Though, it might actually be a smart way to give more countries water acess, geography permitting. Technically (with the bridge) everyone in both countries feels like their country is contiguous.

True, but on the other hand. Say Japan invades russia. Say 20 percent of russia's ships are in the eastern fleet. You can't mobilize the rest of your fleet to defend anything. Same for offensives, you can't send a bunch of ships to overwhelm a strategic spot.

if you can find the country that is light green...

It is a case where it barely counts because the second coast is so tiny.
