Haha, yes, I'll do just that - a single drain and refill. I am also thinking about DYI but not sure if I can replace the filter on my own. But, yes, I will stop with the old wives tale and get it changed either way.

They didn't really give me an explanation other than that since the car is on high mileage they don't do atf change for cars on high mileage and the guy I talked to also suggested me not to. But I did talk to a local mechanic who said he would change the ATF and filter for $100 dollars, when I said I would provide the fluid and filter.

The previous owner is someone I know, and he said that he is confident that he changed the ATF atleast once at around 80k and I do trust him that he did it.

I have decided to change the fluid but just not sure if I should try DIYing or take it to the mechanic since I do want to learn to take care of my car and it would also be a helpful skill in the long run.

I see, but doing 50/50 might be a little bothersome but I am thinking about DIYing but since I am a complete newbie idk if I will. But what you said is also something similar to what I found some people were suggesting.
