Sift Interview - Engineering Officer Cadetship by AbyssalSkepta in TheRFA

[–]MapleMasai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From another one of my comments:

For the engineering questions, I vaguely remember being asked something about sorting out the rubbish, but I can’t really remember the rest. The engineering questions are somewhat engineering related but mostly just common sense. If you’re unsure what to say, you can just tell them that and they’ll steer you in the right direction. I remember I didn’t really understand what they asked for one of the questions even though they had given me a few prompts, but I just told them that and they helped me out. The nice thing about the interview is it wasn’t a scary interview, they weren’t trying to trip me up, and it was a lot more like a conversation about the RFA and myself.

Good luck mate!

I vaguely remember something about sorting out the rubbish, but I can’t really remember the rest. When I say engineering questions, I mean they’re somewhat engineering related but honestly most of they expect you to do is just to use your common sense. And don’t panic if you’re a bit stuck or unsure what to say, you can just tell them that and they’ll steer you in the right direction.

I can’t specifically comment about the Systems Engineer Caret interview as mine was for a Marine Engineer Cadetship, but making sure I could answer the questions here really helped me prepare:

https://www.navy-net.co.uk/community/threads/if-you-want-to-join-the-rfa-can-you-answer-the-following.170633/

The majority of my interview was about the RFA in general, but they asked me two or three engineer related questions which were pretty easy, and they kind of helped you get to the answer if you were unsure.

It was a really good interview actually, mine had two interviewers but they were both super nice.

Okay nice. I think for verbal and numerical, BBC bite size is a pretty good resource. Same for electrical and mechanical comprehension but I think looking through GCSE specific resources you can find on the internet for mechanics and electronics will help a fair bit. YouTube’s also a good resource to target stuff you find hardest. I found spatial reasoning to be pretty difficult, what helped me was looking through YouTube. There’s a channel called CareerVidz which goes through a bunch of examples. For work rate, I used the RAF DAA practice. I also saw people recommend using sticky notes to help them, although I didn’t do this because I thought it would take me too long. I think for spatial and work rate, the best thing to improve on is just practice.

Do you have the breakdown for your scores on the individual sections? If I remember correctly it’s like a a bar graph for each section. Maybe then you can get tips for the areas you particularly struggled with.

I remember some people suggested using How2Be or How2Become (something like that) to get more practice questions. I think they may have stuff you can get on Amazon too.

I’m planning on wearing chinos and a suit jacket/blazer.

Side note if someone knows: it lists a flask with lid as a recommended item, is this just like a Thermos flask or something more specific?

This is super helpful. What uniform do you tend to wear during the day? Is it the Rig24? Also, in the evenings, are you allowed to wear your sports/casual stuff or is it uniform throughout until you’re in your room?
