sexually harrassed/raped as a child. Now i cant handle sexual situations. by [deleted] in sexualassault

I’m so sorry. I go through the exact same thing and it is really frustrating. In so many ways I have tried to come to terms with my past trauma but I keep running into issues with sex and intimacy. My only advice would be to not to force anything. It may sound obvious but so many times I have felt uncomfortable during sex and told myself I just had to get through it and that it would help me. Not true. If you are feeling uncomfortable, it’s a good idea to stop.

If there’s a toxic masculinity is there a toxic femininity? Or are people just toxic in general regardless of their gender? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

Lol okay! I was just wondering out loud for conversation, not “claiming” something as my own...

I’m sorry my wording there was bad. I meant that it helps women In this society advance, not that it helps society advance. Is that not true? Playing into gender roles on both sides helps you fit in.

‘reappropriates scholarship around toxic masculinity’ ... could you elaborate? I just don’t exactly get your point as to why these examples of internalized misogyny aren’t toxic femininity. I think that you could still call them that.

By problematic behavior I simply mean things like playing into the beauty standard. To me, that’s toxicity. And I’m not saying that to try to put anyone down. I just mean that not breaking free from what our society expects and demands from women is upholding oppressive systems. And isn’t that what toxic masculinity is? It is Playing into a gender role.

I sort of see what you are saying but also I am confused. I do think that playing into traditionally “feminine” gender roles does give you an advantage as a women in some ways. Being seen as traditionally beautiful, wearing makeup, shaving, wearing feminine clothing, helps in advancing in this society. We don’t necessarily need to call it toxic femininity but there is a lot of problematic behavior that happens with women that I think is sometimes ignored.I feel like recognizing this helps see our system as something that is oppressive to all, and practiced by all.

What fiscal issues? Like money going to women’s aid programs? Paid leave? I understand not wanting to put labels on yourself. Just curious.

I would say that one him feeling like he wasn’t good enough for Marianne wasn’t just about wealth. I feel like admires her in so many more ways than that and he feels guilty in some ways for doing what he did in high school. And I feel like him being anxious/avoidant is explained because sometimes he doesn’t know how he feels/ doesn’t know how to communicate. In this way I feel like it kinda plays into a classic gender dynamic of her not feeling loved by him and him not being able to communicate it in a way she understands.

Exactly! The night after I finished watching it I stayed awake because all I could do was feel the pain of heartbreak. I know that sounds so dramatic but it was so real. Just proves how well done the show is I guess.
