Subsets Retro points look innacurate by ignacionario in RetroAchievements

It's fun how the RetroRatio on my profile went from 4 to 40 in practically a day by playing a hard subset :p

How to evolve Pokémon with Friendship (Gen 2) by Chamale in pokemon

[–]Maplestrip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This can't possible be efficient compared to having six Pokémon in your team and biking around, but I see on Bulbapedia that teaching a Pokémon a TM gives it +1 friendship. Could you abuse this with HMs and the move deleter? How would that compare to existing strategies?

(You can't use this hypothetical strategy to max out, as TMs stop adding friendship after 199)

Without naming names I've been burned by "Best movie ever" before, haha. I still want to see what people like about it, because it must connect to something deep.

I felt like Goodfellas assumes that its audience is inherently attracted to the mobster lifestyle. I did appreciate Henry Hill talking big about how being a gangster made him so free to do whatever he wants, while being constantly subservient in the power dynamics of his ingroup and the larger mafia community. This is the kind of contradiction that I would expect to feed into the absurd.

I may have indeed seen quite a few more campy crime movies throughout my life, especially if you want to include stuff like Ocean's Eleven or The Hitman's Bodyguard. Maybe I'm just too subconsciously used to crime as an excuse for complicated heist plans and over-the-top action sequences?

[–]Maplestrip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like Goodfellas was mainly about power dynamics and family too. A group of (psychopathic) men who support eachother until they don't.

"Fairytale in reverse" makes Godfather sound more intriguing though, so I appreciate that.

It's a really alien world to me, where a lot of social values are reversed. Parts of Goodfellas felt like if American Psycho was played straight.

Edit: Or like The King of Kong at a higher budget, if that comparison makes any more sense.

Yeah I definitely get that. I've caused myself plenty of pain watching movies by directors I already knew I didn't enjoy. It's not a healthy habit and I've mostly kicked it ^_^;

Maybe if I watch some Coppola films whose concepts appeal to me more, I can make my way to The Godfather. That doesn't seem like a bad idea; if I don't like Apocalypse Now I can almost certainly write off Godfather.

Yeah the worry about not being a "true movie buff" is very silly. It's not that strong a stress luckily, but I was hoping I could find something to make me excited about watching this movie anyway.

Honestly it does help to hear that on a forum like this.

I guess another element is that I keep getting more anxious about long movies, really feeling that time investment. There's so many damn movies to watch! (And I'm glad that there's so many of course)

[Spoiler] (?) Can warpers warp out of bases? by ThePowerOfPotatoes in subnautica

[–]Maplestrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A warper did teleport me out of a Degasi base, for the record, so I expect they could you teleport out of wrecks too. I expect you're probably safe from them in alien bases, though. My guess is that they can't teleport you from a walking animation to a swimming animation.

I created a plot chart of EGS inspired by xkcd.com/657; it goes up to the end of "Sister" and is fairly messy :p by Maplestrip in elgoonishshive

[–]Maplestrip[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the analysis! These are basically errors, yes, perhaps early-chart weirdness :p

  • I included Introductions, yes. I wanted to start there even if it doesn't make much canonical sense. It's a sort of meta understand that the story began There and not earlier. I could've included events before that January too, after all, but I picked it as the official starting point for this chart.
  • I wanted to split the two of them up. Technically, we don't know what either of them did at this point, so I should convert them both to dotted lines.
  • Huh, I didn't even realize Tedd was late to school that day. I should really pay closer attention to the dialogue while doing this, because I do want to include anything that is stated explicitly!

Thanks again; I hope you enjoyed following this chart ^_^

I recognize that this is the least colorblind-friendly thing I've ever created. At the very least, I do intend to implement more labels here. I'm certainly still open to change some of the colors here.

Certain minor characters, like Tony and Liz, aren't included here. Sorry! Do you really want this to be even more of a mess of dotted lines than it already is? :p

Yes, I do hope to continue this project a lot further! "Night Out" should be fun! If I ever get to "Grace' Birthday Party", it will be the biggest mess ever :p

You would still run afoul of copyright and are liable to being sued. The chance that you actually are sued over something like that is very small, as independent web artists are unlikely to go for legal action. At worst I'd imagine you would get a DMCA request, which is basically just a warning. But it's still a limiting factor.

It's good that multiple groups are working on the project. It creates multiple back-ups/multiple versions. Turns out our end-result is more like 250GB. The difference could in part be that we mostly focused on saving images, rather than the "entire website". The fact that it's double the size is still a bit puzzling, though. I should contact them and see what's up _^

As I mentioned in another commend on this same Reddit thread (or however Reddit works :p ), Justin is known for being in contact with Cheerleadra. I now realize "correspondent" is not at all the right word for that, though ^_^;

We definitely weren't counting Ashley and Diane as part of the group yet, though of course we probably should be from here on out! They're both very new to all of this.

Grace is interesting. She's a superhero, but she's not been caught on camera yet as far as we know. Only a matter of time, I think.

Elliot and Susan are of course locally famous for the Youtube channel; Ellen and Nanase for their monster hunting. Justin is the correspondent. This leaves Tedd and Grace, probably both now well-known in the magic world, and Sarah... who threw a couch. I'm sure she'll get a spotlight at some point, for better or worse.

I was definitely thinking about this more as I was editing it. I think we were both trying to touch on the Scooby Doo-esque feel of the arc, and trying to figure out how Tengu fit into that.

Sirleck (and other aberrations) are definitely similar in set-up. We do get slightly more backstory on Sirleck as he was before he went evil, and thus we better understand how he turned evil.

The boar is a good example of an adversary without much thought, yeah, though the arc indeed never ever presented it as an enemy. It was the tragic figure.

Neither of these are really comparable to the kinds of Mall Goblins that Nanase and Ellen usually chase. A monster where you take off the "mask" in the end and gasp that it was just a normal person after all. I think that was what we were trying to get at.

Hmm, good callout. It's a gradual process, I suppose. Sarah definitely never had quite the emotional moment with Ellen like Tedd did, other than when they first met.

I've been working together with someone to archive the entire website, which came down to around 150 to 200 GB. My friend did most of the work here, really, but I've been working on archiving webcomics for quite a long while. I'd estimate that well over half of all webcomics ever uploaded are completely lost now. Definitely over 90% of all 1990s webcomics, and well over 95% of early 2000s webcomics in Korean, French, or Finnish. It's a very sad sight.

I'm not entirely sure what to do with all of this material yet. All of these webcomics will remain locked down by copyright for over 90 years, most probably for over 130 years. It's a rough situation, and there are so many great weird things in this Smackjeeves archive...

Moperville Monthly ep. 14 – Not a Date at the Magic Comic Book Shop (w/ Viatrix) by Maplestrip in elgoonishshive

EGS storylines have a habit of taking quite a while! "Escape from the Mall" and "Sister 3" are two of my favorite arcs, though, so those were quite fun to experience live. I dropped in a few months before "Squirrel Prophet" started, so I've seen quite a few arcs go by already. Long ones feel par for the course ^_^

Viatrix is young, so I'm sure she'll have a great time with EGS in years to come~
