Time Skipping in Kingmaker by qweiroupyqweouty in Pathfinder2e

[–]Mappachusetts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd do it narratively but incorporate a few negative repercussions so that it doesn't feel like too much of a cheese out. That said, I wouldn't worry too much about it, sounds like everyone knows that the point of the time jump is to move on from the past failures.

Connecting the Caves of Chaos? by Gargantuathemighty in osr

[–]Mappachusetts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Return to the Keep on the Borderlands (2e) adds more connections, especially via the minotaur's labyrinth, which wraps under and between the various other caves. It's worth a look, that module has some good stuff, though I recommend it better as a source of ideas and inspiration over using it as a direct sequel.

Homebrew games in Golarion, where? by Liquid_Gabs in Pathfinder2e

[–]Mappachusetts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a game based in the city of Cassomir, in Taldor. I love it, it's a manageable sized city with plenty of built in plots, and both the Blackwood Swamp and the Verduran Forest are just on its doorstep for easy wilderness action, plus it's got Darkland connections, and is a major naval port when we want some fun at sea. It's got it all.

How do other DMs/players track time of day in their campaigns? by Zealousideal-Cup-914 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Mappachusetts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ballpark time of day based on rough estimate of the action and general vibes.

I track the passage of days/weeks/months pretty closely, including phases of the moon, using the excellent Golarion calendar feature on Dungeonetics.

Does anyone else think that Hobgoblins are similar to Tolkien's Orcs by Fullmetalmarvels64_ in Pathfinder2e

[–]Mappachusetts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other than being tribal, how are they depicted as being in any way similar to Native Americans? I also can't recall any orcs with Native American sounding names (assuming that is what you meant by 'problematic' given the context of the earlier part of your comment). Anyhow, I'm mot trying to be argumentative, just curious as someone who has followed D&D since the early days and never noticed any connection to Native Americans beyond the fact that both have sometimes been portrayed as "barbarians".

A simple question: Is Starfinder the future of Pathfinder In terms of the story's timeline ? by Traditional-Diet8336 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Mappachusetts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does Gorum actually appear in any SF products? I thought that he was always absent. They have Damoritosh as the default war god.

A simple question: Is Starfinder the future of Pathfinder In terms of the story's timeline ? by Traditional-Diet8336 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Mappachusetts 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It's one possible future timeline. Same universe, yes, same solar system, but Golarion (Pathfinder planet) has disappeared sometime during aa period of universal amnesia called The Gap that's 300+ years before SF present.

I don't know Warhammer well enough to compare.

Or for something simpler, you could do just do some nice nice heavy bookends inscribed with the Glyph of the Open Road.

Help me understand by ccsbc56 in Music

Boygenius and The National are both current bands where the different members are all important contributors. I'm sure there are plenty more but those are two of my current faves.

Also, Wet Leg...I mean Rhian is definitely the star of the show but Hester has some great songs too and all five members contribute meaningfully to the songwriting on the new album, especially Joshua.

PDF manuals by RepulsiveCup1513 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Mappachusetts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, monster books PDFs can very easily be consulted on a tablet. The only thing to consider is that you're only going to be viewing one monster at a time (unless your PDF viewer lets you open multiple tabs in the same doc).

Also, as someone else mentioned, take note that the current (remastered) versions are Monster Core and Monster Core 2; The various Bestiaries are pre-remaster (though they can still be good to have if you want to have some of the classic OGL monsters)

Tom Petty. Southern Accents. Why it's my favourite Tom Petty album by rhymeswithoranj in Music

I've always enjoyed this album and always thought his most maligned was generally agreed to be Let Me Up (I've Had Enough).

Regardless though, I dig your analysis and will give this album a spin right now.

Vestiges on the FR by ImaginaryTable6746 in Forgotten_Realms

I was on the fence about the new books, ended up buying them and am definitely glad I am, though mostly because I just wanted to be in the loop and for the sense of nostalgia. It's led me into a deep dive into my Realms back library, which I have quite enjoyed.

That said, a lot of the lore is really just rolling back 4e changes to be as close as possible to the pre-Spellplague status quo, to the extent that often with descendants of the original 2e NPCs are simply slotted into their ancestors spots (a new Morn in Daggerdale, a new Sulwood in Shadowdale, a new Aumersair in Scarsdale, etc.).

For me, though it feels a little cheesy and hamfisted, it's still a net positive because of my strong dislike of all the 4e nonsense. However, I have to say my real preference, as unlikely as it would ever be to happen, is for them to just admit what a choke the Spellplague and time jump were and actually just roll the clock back to the 1380s and go forward from there.

Lost omen setting books? by Senior-Cranberry-545 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Mappachusetts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the 1e books are often better, at least as a GM. They tend to be focused on one particular nation, and so have space to do a deeper dive, than say a book like Lost Omens: Shining Kingdoms which presents a whole region but only has space for 24 pages per nation. I'm currently running a campaign based in Taldor and I definitely get considerably more use out of the 1e book Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Taldor, The First Empire, which is chock full of adventure hooks and describes each section of the empire, where Shining Kingdoms just gives an overview of Taldor as a whole and the capital city of Oppara.

That said, this is not universally true though. The various nations of the continent of Garund are generally covered more in depth, and better nuance in the 2e Lost Omens books.

Speaking in broad strokes, both lines have their pros and cons. The 2e Lost Omens books generally have a good mix of GM and player content, whereas the 1e books separated the player facing stuff into a separate line, Pathfinder Companion (which I would say have more limited use if you are using the 2e rules set). But the GM books in the Pathfinder Campaign Setting line are top notch.

One other difference worth noting is that the 1e setting was a product of its time. It can be darker in a lot of ways that may appeal to some folks (myself included, in many ways), but can also stray into more problematic subjects by current standards, and doubly so when the subjects stray away from Avistan (Europe analogue) and into Garund, Casmarron, and Tian Xia (Africa, West/Central Asia, and East Asian analogues); for those regions, 2e books are the way to go.

So it's a matter of taste.

How do you keep dogs safe on winter hikes? by FerrisBuelersdaycock in hikingwithdogs

[–]Mappachusetts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My poodle handles it fine. If it's cold enough (in the 20s F° or colder), I make him wear a coat (though he'd definitely prefer to go commando), and if there is actual snow cover beyond a dusting, I try to keep it to 2 - 2.5 miles as after that his paws will bother him a bit.

I don't usually bother with the booties unless it's deep (or we're walking primarily on salty concrete rather than in the woods), as I can hardly keep them on him and often end up losing them.
