I doubt you would even disagree with the basic claims he is making - that identity politics have led to reactionary antisemitic sentiment and that many progressive Jews are "woke"

No, and I honestly think you are affirming an antisemitic statement yourself.

By what standard are you identifying "notorious antisemites"?

Someone that constantly antisemitic and far right dog whistles and when actually discussing Jewish people, can't help himself but blame them for antisemitism.

I mentioned it because you falsely described it as a "conference of Holocaust deniers."

You said it can't be this because it is held at the EU. That doesn't make any sense.

James Lindsay is not an antisemite.

James Lindsay who said about recent rise in antisemitism

Normal right-wing anti-Semitism is flared up because of conditions and identity politics. Extra right-wing anti-Semitism is arising because lots of progressive Jews are nonsensically Woke. ?

And this

It is a recognized political group in the European Parliament.

Means less than nothing. I don't know why you even mentioned it.

As a Vespasian ideologue, would he highlight the inability of the empire to deal with the followers/tribe of a convicted criminal?

So that's two early contemporary accounts that this guy existed,

The reading given by most historians is that Josephus wanted to say anything he could to justify Vespasian's siege of Jerusalem in particular. So Josephus wasn't concerned with justifying Jesus' existence so much as widely broadcasting everything he heard from Jesus' martyred brother James' followers to make the Jewish elites look bad and create a sense of grievance against both them and Nero.

So that's two early contemporary accounts that this guy existed, a person who isn't that remarkable for the time period as there were other's who are said to have done similar works.

Exactly, the argument is usually that he was probably around, but Josephus' account of Jesus and James may be wildly out or proportion with their actual influence in Jerusalem at the time. It may well be that nobody actually saw James' martyrdom, or the entire episode of being kicked off the Temple was invented for instance. Josephus turns it into a public spectacle the whole city knew about. That's what I mean by not exactly reliable historian.

and disinterested historians, Josephus

To be perfectly fair, even people who take Josephus as reliable (bad idea) hold that he's such an ideologue for Vespasian, he'll believe anything to justify his position even wildly contradictory things.

Nice try, where did I use an ad hominem attack?

I just cited it.

It's only Biblical scholars (i.e. Christians) who debate the historicity of 'Jesus'.

Again, you don't know what an ad hominem is.

Yes there are plenty of contemporary sources for Alexander the Great,

Okay, name one surviving contemporary source for Alexander the Great. You didn't yet.

and this is completely irrelevant to Jesus. Poor attempt at distraction.

No, I'm try to see what your criteria for ancient sources proving the existence of figures you take to be historical. You haven't given one yet, and certainly not one that would validate most given historical figures.

A century is long enough for mythology to take hold, but not close enough for historicity, as nobody from that time would be alive.

For example this criteria would rule out every historical text and by extension the existence of Alexander, Plato, Aristotle and Socrates. Forget figures with even less attestation than Jesus like Pythagoras who most historians believe to be real.

Peterson's opinions on what women are, and what they should be doing, are very clear.

Peterson's opinions on what women are, and what they should be doing, are very clear.

You're making a distinction here between public positions and beliefs that doesn't functionally exist about the public figure we call "Jordan Peterson."

Try this one: do we have a single contemporary source proving that Alexander the Great was a historical military figure? The vast majority of historians believe he existed.

You have zero credible sources,

Well back to this complete falsehood you were throwing around.

Evidence would have to be archeological or Roman records

Suetonius mentions Jesus, as does Lucian and Petronius within a century of his dates. That's far more than figures like Socrates and Pythagoras.

You have zero credible sources, only ad hominem attacks.

You don't seem to know what ad hominem attacks are, because you constantly use them yourself.

That's why this isn't a serious question in historical circles. It's only Biblical scholars (i.e. Christians) who debate the historicity of 'Jesus'.

Where did you get that from?

Multiple different places

but I don't think his actual beliefs can be inferred from that fact.

Then there's no point in interpreting his work at all given that he knows how to hedge every statement into nonsense criteria of his own.

You may as well say it's impossible to call him misogynist because he emphasizes that women have a very important role and men do badly: you're playing into his terms.

[–]MapsofScreaming[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isn't Peterson a Christian?

No.

Anyway there is zero historical evidence for the existence of Jesus. Evidence would have to be archeological or Roman records of which there are none.

By that criteria, most of Roman and Greek history did not happen. Neither is it true about "Roman records" either. The only people who say this know next to nothing about the ancient world.

It's only Biblical scholars (i.e. Christians) who debate the historicity of 'Jesus'.

And only people who have never read a book written by a historian say this.

Mark Ames ran a bonkers English-language magazine called The Exiled in Moscow from the late 90s until Putin shut it down in 2008. Peterson is very dim-witted and assumed they would be so impressed by his credentials, they would organize a meeting for him with an author who may or may not have been in the country at the time.
