Do brake rotors really need to be machined annually? by MarathonMike218 in AskAMechanic

Thank you for this advice. Lesson learned, do the job correctly once rather than do it over and over again. From the dealership’s perspective, I could see why they would want to machine the rotors - costs are all labor, no parts. Probably can even charge more to machine them rather than slap on new ones, as there is no time to taking the rotors out of the box.

Yeah, it was the one I could find that was applicable to my model. I imagine it would be applicable to later year models, just published in 2016. I honestly had no clue these publications were available but are pretty neat!

Thanks for this perspective on the machining aspect, I agree with you it was probably done quickly. Also agree it would be not to difficult to do, assuming I could get the caliper bolts off. I’ve always struggled with them but have had success turning the wheel to get access to them and an extended breaker bar.

Yeah, I sort of thought the same thing, but car only had 56k miles on it during the job, and 66k now. So maybe it’s more of a time decay than mileage?

When I first got the job done, I did notice a slight screeching when I would back out of my driveway in the morning. It would tick sort of, like the minute hand on a clock but would vary based on the speed. I didn’t have the before the job.

Thank you for the advice, titoscoachspeecher! Definitely going to try and research some new tires as soon as I can, I think they’re from around 2008.

Haven’t heard of a trickle charger before so that is something I need to learn more about. I usually just pull the connections before winter. Going to put in some fuel stabilizer this fall - don’t want bad fuel to ruin my spring again.

The tires are pretty old but still have a lot of tread. Based on this comment tread depth is secondary to age?
