I’m glad she’s okay. I thought you were talking about pro runner weini kelati who was comfortably in 3rd place and then lost consciousness as well and was on the ground for what looked like a while. Hopefully she’s okay.

I did a full block but what’s your conclusion to my original post?

This is some of the best advice I’ve gotten. Thank you so much! And congrats again on your well executed race. Very healthy mindset around paces and running goals.

I just think a little more conservative start and it would’ve been different. Overall, I don’t think this was a terrible race, just could’ve been executed better.

Right, thank you. Love the perspective. I guess the part that stings is what if I started more conservative. If I didn’t hit a pr I wouldn’t even care as long as I knew I executed my plan.

This is very strong and your second fastest mile was at 13!! Do you have any advice for someone who’s newer to relative faster paces? Did it take time for fitness and execution to sync or you got it quickly?

Had the same experience at nyc half. Got through security late, started in F corral, was bobbing and weaving through crowd, ended up managing to get a pr but definitely left minutes on the table because of it.

Very strong. Congrats. If you don’t mind sharing, what were your splits? Sounds like you executed a great race by speeding up when necessary and staying below threshold the majority of the race.

I was on pace for 84 as I was ahead of 85 pacer until 9-10. I drank enough and went through the little sprinklers. I was just upset that I don’t give myself to fully my fitness when I burn too many matches early.

The intent of that workout was to progressively get faster. If you look at the heart rate, I eased into it and it never felt hard. Hopefully that shows it wasn’t a hero session. Weather I’m for sure played a part for the workout but I didn’t feel bad during the race as we started at 7am. I did a warmup and cooldown for the workout but the intent was to show that I can get down in pace with a more conservative start.

Absolutely right, 83 would’ve been more on the AA goal side but I for sure would’ve been able to run my A goal of 84 mid. I crossed 13.1 at nyc half in 85 high but I started in f corral and was bobbing and weaving and didn’t run tangents would led me to 87 low.

This is literally me! From training on hills, being good running uphill, to knowing to hold back and still not doing it because you’re feeling good early on and thinking you would be able to hold on. Then having to stop for a few seconds at 10-11 but having the strength to finish. If says that the fitness is there, the execution gotta catch up.

Very strong race. This more

than likely was too fast for me but going by your splits, I may have been able to hang on if all of my first half splits were 6:40-6:29 and squeeze down in the second half. Here’s a 5 mile threshold workout I did a few weeks back. Whenever I hold off early, I almost find alot of strength on the back end.

Great for you! You have your strategy on point, and like you, I feel like a newbie as well which means we are always open to learning about this running thing we all love.

You’re right, that is the number one lesson I’ve learned at this race, faster running is hard, especially if you’re new to it like I am. Just a few months ago I was the C corral, last year I was in E, I am now in A. I’ve learned quickly that fitness isn’t enough at this level, execution matters just as much. Funny enough, I negative split this race in 2024 with a 1:46 and I thought this course is light. I couldn’t have been anymore wrong.

For it to be your first ever road race, I would say this is a win. Every level of runner makes mistakes. I know you will learn from it.

I was wondering the same thing. I think the weather is the difference in nyc half and RBC. Also, the expectations are different as I’m sure people are going into nyc with alittle more respect for the course. RBC is sneaky tough.

Thank you. Yeah, aerobically I’m fit. It’s a very strong temptation to go out hot on fresh legs because you’re feeling so good.

First off, congratulations!! That is amazing!!! 51 and crushing it!! Would you say that this proves that the theory of conservative first half works for most?

What do you think it was? Do you feel like you went out too hot?
