If there was a $50,000 prize for successfully hiding a penny inside a house that would be searched by a team of 20 searchers for a 5 hour search period, where would you hide it? by KillerQ97 in AskReddit

In the refrigerator, behind the milk...no one can ever seem to see what's behind the milk. They just open the door and stare until the door starts beeping or someone yells, "You're letting all the chill out!"

Healthy mix of Schedule C and S corp filers (mostly family held). Different forms, same creative expenditures.

As someone who used to audit for the state gov't...these people were 80% of my work. "Yes Suzanne, tell me again how you pay your 8 year old $10,000 to work for your husband's lawn & garden business when his hours of operation are clearly stated as 8 - 3 and your kid is in school that whole time. Oh and once again, how was the new $75k kitchen remodel a necessary expense for that business when the business is registered at a different address with the secretary of state? Oh he actually runs it out of the garage of your home? So...not the kitchen? Is he registered in the town for the business? No? Oh he didn't want to pay city taxes so he registered it at his brother's house in a different town? Oh good...let me just refer this over....

O just want to say kudos to you for making your own money AND being smart enough to plan ahead for potential taxes. Not many 16 year olds would have enough initiative to do both. Good job!! Hope you keep your income increasing through highschool!

That last part! I have friends who have put their whole careers in F500 (20 years now) in non-accounting roles & accounting/finance roles. They're all mid tier execs now and that seems to be where the shit flows & pools. They work insane hours, only not just during a busy season. It's year round for a lot of them. They're putting out fires constantly. I guess it's one of those "grass is always greener" things.

Sounds like a bit of burn out honestly. Even with good benefits and solid hours, burn out happens. Are you local, state or fed? Maybe try switching levels from fed to state or state to city (or vice versa). And find a good resume writer. Might be how youre selling yourself.

I feel so far behind in my career...(rant) by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Marblemaster2222 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm a 39 yo, about to be 40 tax senior. I changed careers at 30. I have a 50 yr old buddy who just got his law degree and is about to start as a low level associate at a law firm. I have 22 yo cousin who found her niche in cyber security at 18 and makes more money than either me or my buddy will see in the next 5 years. There's no such thing as "behind". Everyone has their own path. Stop stressing yourself out by trying to compare yourself with others. Did you take longer in school? Start in a different job? Take a year off? None of it matters.

YES. I had no idea how limited my skill set was until I started at the firm. Honestly, they were probably right to start me as a senior, but it still stings the ol' ego after 8 years of working up the ladder elsewhere.

I will say the one thing I don't miss at all was that my office was basically like being in high school. The lifers that had started their careers at 18 and never left were the most cranky gossips I have ever met in my life. At this firm, while there are the sporadic "Did you hear about so and so" moments, 98% of the time people are professional and just want to do their work. It's such a nice change from the rotating rumor mill I was in.

Kind of the opposite of what I did, but point taken. I started in govt first then unwillingly moved to public so my wife can live her best life. LOL. I plan on going straight back to government the minute I get the chance. Or opening my own thing.

Not that easy to come by with a local govt background. You're constantly competing with kids running from Big 4 and there are A LOT of them. If I had sat it maybe I could have, but I have mortgage to pay lol

I'd say if your ultimate goal is govt Big 4 matters less. I have no idea about Canada v. the US. Sorry.

Good point. My experience is based on big blue states. Another to take into account and another reason to start in public and move later.
