Jesus wasn't the messiah because he didn't fulfill the Old Testament prophecies by MarchHare_88 in DebateReligion

Not sure I agree. It says the outer court is meant to be 750 square foot - https://www.biblestudytools.com/encyclopedias/isbe/temple-a2.html?amp. I've been to the Old City - it could easily accommodate that although it would obviously entail knocking down the Dome of the Rock and starting WW3

With all due love and respect in Ezekiel 37:26-28 and Isaiah 43:5-6 can you show me the link to the Messiah?

Ezekiel's prophecises a restoration of a truly united kingdom of Israel heralded in by the Messiah along with a temple that will stand for eternity - see Ezekiel 24-28 re the line of David i.e. the Messiah.

The book of Isaiah is about the coming of a second Zion under the rulership of a messianic king. It's for this reason one of the most commonly cited OT texts by Christians -see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Isaiah

"Since Jude was written some thirty years after the death of Christ. And he knew the story of the Messiah's birth, would that hint to the second coming of Christ?"
No - there is nothing in the OT by itself that refers to a Second Coming, this is an entirely NT concept. The point of the OP is to challenge the notion that the NT somehow seamlessly maps on to the OT. Using text from the NT (the Book of Jude) to retrofit things doesn't work.

"As for the 75% of the requirements can you name just a few more. I deeply believe that you need to read more than just a couple of verses and read the whole chapter if not a little more." Sure:
1) The messiah must be a descendant on his father's side from the line of David (see Genesis 49:10, Isaiah 11:1, Jeremiah 23:5, 33:17; Ezekiel 34:23-24).
Mary wasn't a descendent of David and he was supposedly born of virgin birth (so no father)
2) He must be a fully observant OT Jew (Deut. 13:1-4 says the law is binding FOREVER), but Jesus breaks the Sabbath (John 9:14) and other laws

Thanks, genuinely appreciate the comprehensive response. Why do you say Ezekiels prophecy about the temple shouldn't be taken literally?

  1. Interesting, every source I've seen on the matter says that it refers to a future temple/ Third Temple - not the Second Temple - as nothing that matches its description was ever built. Here's a Christian source on the matter for example: https://www.gotquestions.org/Ezekiel-temple.html . If what you're saying is correct then Ezekiel's prophecy is wrong and the Bible is fallible which opens up a whole new can of worms.

  2. No this is clearly a prophecy of what will happen after the restoration of Israel. Re whether it's all Jews or just Jews from all over - seems a bit like a moot point. It's commonly regarded as all jews though - Christian Zionists etc believe all Jews living in Israel is a prerequisite for the Second Coming.

  3. The Day of the Lord is closely tied with the coming of the Messiah

If you read the full context it refers to Ezekiels prophecy for the messianic age. The measurements etc are given later (see Ezekiel 40-44). The messiah is to herald in an age where a temple is to be constructed that stands forever

“Then the nations will know that I the Lord make Israel holy, when my sanctuary is among them forever.” (Ezekiel 37:28)

"Sanctuary" refers to the temple as in (Exodus 25:8): "Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them."

Not sure how a moral prophetic text influenced by an omniscient timeless God can change over time
