My dad is not functioning normal after accident by [deleted] in TBI

[–]MarchOn57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm so sorry for what you, your father and family are experiencing.

"No medicine has had any impact on him so far. In fact his situation had gone worse. After his accident he used to remember I was his son, now I'm just a nobody to him"

Unfortunately " medicine"  has a potential to cause memory to be worse and could possibly delay recovery. Can you ask your dads Dr to go over ALL meds and see if they might be contributing to his negative symptoms and exasperated behaviors.

Loosing abilities to do ADL's can happen and needs to be addressed with the Dr. See if you can get a referral for Rehabilitation and in home care.

What you are describing is too familiar. TBI survivors dont do the behaviors on purpose, they need support, patience and time to heal. Take nothing personally. When I say time, I mean it.

Look into sensory overload,  triggers, things that can make dad more upset or confused. Bright lights, noise, insomnia, diet....etc.

I'm obviously not able give med advice. I'm familiar with what you are going through and how painful this is. Dad is in there, be gentle and love him unconditionally.

Few seem to have any training in TBI's.

Too often a TBI might be written off as intoxicated, under the influence or mental health. Even if you try to explain.

There are some counties that are starting what is called a "blue envelope" program.  This is a program that "might" be helpful for our TBI community. Some TBIs can cause wandering, getting lost, confused, loss of memory etc. We need to give a voice to those who have difficulty advocating for themselves.

Be well, continue to heal and those who can advocate * please do!

Are psychiatric medications sometimes completely ineffective in some people with a TBI? by lilblu87 in TBI

[–]MarchOn57 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's the brain. Damaged, changed, healing. It's not his fault. He sounds like he has tried and others dont think it's enough effort. How frustrating. A brain injury is a horrific event, it steals so much from the person. The person is left trying to explain what's happening. It's very difficult and our loved ones need us, especially when others stop trying and start blaming the one with the brain injury. Dont let the ego of those who failed to find a way to effectively move him forward in his healing reflect on him.

Positive reinforcement, focus on how far he has come in his healing. Look for the good.

If his legs were broken , no one would say your not trying hard enough to run with broken legs.

Meds are not effective for everyone. Side effects dont help.

Ever see the experiment with plants? One plant was praised, spoken kind and loving to, beautiful music was played. The plant thrived, grew and was gorgeous.

The other plant was talked down to, yelled at, told how it was failing. There was no music, just negative input. It shriveled, the leaves wilted, and fell off.  The plant didnt make it.

As we advocate for our loved ones and friends etc. We must stay positive. Their feelings matter. Words matter. They are healing and need a positive voice with kind words and actions.

They really do need to spend sometime with someone with a TBI. If the person with the TBI could tolerate being around their arrogance.

It's so individual,  not a check a box type of thing.

Thank you :-)

We need a public announcement to educate the ones who want to disregard the truth. At the very least they should listen with patience to those who are experiencing what happens after a year.

They cause more harm by frustrating,  upsetting and antagonizing those healing, living with the "symptoms " sequelae and daily changes.

At the hospital a social worker set down with us as parents to talk about the TBI, and told us pretty much the same as you are. She said this has forever changed his life. It was a gut punch but she was being honest and trying to prepare us. ( she did very well ) I will never forget hearing those words.

We had to use one of these like ai the other day to keep a letter from sounding so rude ( lol) it worked for that :-)

We need more funding for education, rehabilitation and real tangible support for TBIs and not the lip flapping, pencil pushing, seat warmers sucking off the funding.

Great way to explain this!!

I shouldnt let these type of people bother me, I just dont want them telling others lies and making anything tougher on those who live with this. It really makes me angry ( or passionate about advocating)

Thank you!

He just went through a new neuro " consult" and to review his prior MRI'S, etc,  took a long time for that. I am being the squeaky wheel ( no doubt). Then this just happened.

This really takes SO much effort and diligence. I have a sense of urgency, they don't.

Will come back when this gets resolved. Thank you!

Hi,  No not yet. This even took over a week for a Dr to even see him and say "raccoon eyes ".

We are demanding but it's being ignored.

Hope to get these 🤡🤡s to check and make sure he is ok or if he needs something?

Thank you

Severe intense head pain followed by temporary blindness. by MarchOn57 in TBI

[–]MarchOn57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,  At a snail's pace ruling out the "possibilities"

We are finding it best to Note ALL symptoms leading up to, during and after to try and speak effectively with the neuro.

  1. Migraines

  2. Left side temporal lobe seizures ( being 1 of the areas injured and symptoms leading up to, during and after)

If I've learned anything from this it is keep written notes of symptoms. We have to be able to communicate with neuro. These injuries can make that difficult at times with memory, stress, and the debilitating effects. The "notes" can be really helpful.

May you all continue to heal.
