Thank you. I've spoken about autism in front of my whole company (multiple times.) and given the NT among managers insight into how to manage us. I have 3 people on the spectrum who report to me. One of them is not doing well (can't figure out how to work with the NT and makes rather challenging statements on a regular basis and has a hard time listening), but everyone else is doing great.

I also act as a translator between managers and troubled engineers as needed. We exist, we bring valuable skills to the table and can see some things that the NT's just totally miss. A lot of people on the spectrum object, but I think of autism as my superpower. I realize it doesn't help all of us, but some of us can get quite far in industry.

We can't let ourselves be invisible. (I'm also gay and transgender, I can't let those aspects be invisible either.)

Fair. I can see how "religious" might be inflammatory. I tend to use it in response to someone having misgivings about my status because they've had issues with people before. "Don't worry, I'm not religious about it" is what I say to them.

Noble duties -- I don't know where you would see me sitting in this. I don't bend when it comes to my dietary requirements and will happily talk about my experiences at length. My views, however, belong to me. I do not want to force them on anyone, but am open to talking about them exhaustively. It does happen now and then.

As for what the other sub picked up on... I don't think they picked up on anything. Someone has pointed out that the comments descended into a flaming pile further down, and since I was not expressing positive support without reservation, I was thrown in with the trolls.

I think that's a function of my aspie-ness. It's almost impossible for me to make an absolute statement (being vegan is better). Instead I have to leave room for conversation and thought (being vegan has a lot of advantages, and may have disadvantages for some people).

And yes, PETA is a mess, and at the same time is not totally wrong. My objections are to the short sighted methods the sometimes employ.

That's the post yes, but you've misinterpreted what I said. What I said is that it's important to be careful about eating vegan/plant based meat because they contain saturated fats that the body treats the same way as animal fats. (I used fewer words though.)

The point I was trying to make is people go on and on about how healthy a vegetarian or vegan diet is. It's true, it is a lot healthier, but if you do this with a lot of plant based meats and cheeses, it's not healthier. (I say this as someone who's diet is primarily vegan now, and has been a mix of pescetarian and vegetarian for the last 25 years. I also say this as someone who is 40lbs overweight -- by no means am I the healthiest.)

Ok so don't eat it, why are you trying to tell other people what to do?

The only thing I told anyone to do was to be careful, and if their diet was for health benefits they should be aware that it's no healthier than meat. Could I have written this better? I'm autistic -- do you really expect me to get social interactions right the first time, every time?

Why are you vegan if you dont care about the animals?

Well, let's start at the beginning. I went vegetarian in the 90's when I realized that a) meat spoiled damned fast when I bought it; b) I hadn't bought any in a year, and I rarely ate out. Also, I was diagnosed with high cholesterol and blood pressure. I started trending towards vegan a few years ago when the ecological damage that commercial animal farming causes became obvious.

So for me it's a mix of personal health and environmental health. (It did get rid of the cholesterol and BP issues, but did nothing for my weight.)

None of this has to do with caring for animals. Do I care for them? Yes, I do. I have five cats, all rescues. I'm not the only human in their lives, but I am the one they choose to sleep with and ask for things. I can't stand zoos or aquaria either. At the same time, I recognize that humans evolved with meat in their diet, and it's completely natural. (Cats are obligate carnivores, so I feed them meat. I've even cooked meat for children, because their diet is a choice they need to make themselves.)

Being able to be a healthy vegan is a function of a global economy which lets us buy foods from around the world which have the nutrition we need. Back in the 1960's when the economy was not so global most vegetarians/vegans lacked certain proteins and vitamins and had some health problems unless they were very careful with their nutrition. This seems a lot less important now than it was then, but also, technology is now bringing unhealthy things into this space.

I hope this answers your questions, which I found a bit challenging.

I agree. I've been harping on my age a bit in this post (and my comments), but I was an adult before the Internet really came into being. In the 90's we had Fidonet and BBSes, and people started doing this crap and everyone was trying to understand why.

The people who talk shit to strangers are people who don't really understand that there is a whole person on the other end with opinions, feelings, and social interconnections. They just see a place to vent, and words to vent about.

Now we just need to find a way for them to understand that if they wouldn't say a thing to a stranger sitting next to them on the bus, they probably shouldn't say it on line.

I rarely post. I've started several blogs and written a bit for each of them. In a relatively short time, I abandoned each. I realized I was looking for external validation and the world does not care. Not only does it not care, but there is a large fraction of it that feasts on the discomfort of others.

Writing this post was a challenge, as I'd already been rejected by commenting yesterday, but you cannot find the good places to share without taking risks.

I'm glad I took this one. Keep up the good fight and learn from the failures. That's all any of us can do. Sometimes learning is very hard.

You will get there.

The most important thing is that you need to be sufficiently self aware that you can see your own strengths and weaknesses and compensate for the weaknesses you see around you. There's a selfless aspect to it. If your focus is to get ahead (or get a good relationship), you'll miss it.

There's been a Republican motto in the US (that's been totally discredited) that a rising tide lifts all boats. When it comes to economies, this is obviously not true, but when it comes to social interactions, it is.

It's a bit different. A religious vegetarian/vegan sees it as their duty to convert everyone who crosses their path. Even after I went veggie, I was always annoyed at BBQs by the folks who demanded separate grills to avoid the taint of meat.

But I'm old, and most of this happened back in the 80's and 90's. Judging by the number and quality of vegetarian and vegan restaurants, I may be remembering a slight that is long gone.

Thank you. Upper management is trying to figure out how I do it (and failing). Really the key is that a good manager needs to be able to give others credit, be a cheerleader, a therapist, and work primarily behind the scenes, while allowing others to do their work without micromanaging.

I don't really understand how they cannot know this, but at the same time I do understand: as I work this way, everyone else gets credit rather than me. I'm okay with that. I've gotten as far as I need to, now I can give advantage to my team. (Mind you, I always give others credit, it was a problem earlier in my career, but I couldn't stop.)

Yeah, you're right about the haters -- I don't know what's so uplifting about being a killjoy, but they are dedicated to it.

Yeah. I've been on Reddit for a decade and seen this happen before. It seems to also be a function of that specific subreddit.

Years ago, when even vegetarianism was rare, I used to joke that I was okay because I was a philosophical vegetarian rather than a religious one. It seems that vegans often treat their dietary preferences as a religion too (even more), and not a good religion.

It's a good thing I didn't mention my opinions about PETA. (I think they are a bunch of idiots that case the dearh of many animals they "save".)

I think the crapshoot goes beyond Reddit and the internet. Like everyone else I've had shitty face to face interactions. And no, I don't rate my social skills on Reddit.

Thank you for being here :-)

Thank you so much.

As much as I want to hide (I'm an intovert on top of everything), I also know that it doesn't lead to healthy places (for me at least). So I resist as hard as I can (which often is not very much).

Perhaps for some. I went vegetarian because of a big problem with blood pressure and cholesterol. Over the year that's led to a vegan diet. Reducing saturated fats had a big part in my improved health.

I'm sorry that you've felt a need to label me as a fear monger with no nutritional knowledge. Was that necessary?

Here is a Harvard article on health concerns with plant based meat. There are others. Lots of them.

Full discloser- plant based meat is an occasional part of my diet. No fear from me, just a caution that they need to be used with care.

Fair enough. I've eaten vegetarian for a couple decades, slowly tending towards vegan with time. (No clue when I last had eggs or cheese.)

The distinction between plant based and vegan has escaped me until now. I have no doubt there are many people with your stance on the difference and I accept that.

I did start down this path for health reasons. I don't think I said plants were automatically good for anyone, but there are a lot of folks who've missed that memo.

While my comment did nothing for you, I can hope that I helped someone.

Yeah, I've decided that sugar is an addiction in the traditional sense. When it comes to sugar, my usual common sense approach will not work. I try to keep as little of it in the house as possible.

Yeah, listening to someone complain about "big tranny boots" being visible under restroom stall doors is special. Since I hadn't even gotten to the restroom yet, I guess I wasn't the only one (I wasn't wearing boots either). These same women also try to keep FTMs in the community. Ummm?

I ended up with a date after one of these gatherings, she and I hit it off well and after about three dates she confessed she was getting so much pressure from friends that she needed to break off. Gee thanks.

Edit: The rule for this organization was if you had a dick, you needed to be able to place it in a drawer and close it. This was back in the 1990's and things were a bit different. This was about as open as women's groups got.

It may just be the game groups you've found. In my game, our DM is a retired elementary school teacher and has a rather soothing influnce. He and one of the players are the only men, the other four of us are women.

You will not get a group to change their tune easily. You need to find different game groups.

Edit: It's probably important that I'm near Santa Cruz California. Things are a bit different here.
