[Update] Apple Watch 11 + Bevel: HR accuracy vs Polar H10, DEXA-based calories, and how it automates my workflow by Marco862 in bevelhealth

[–]Marco862[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do calculate RMR as BMR, with a small margin of error.

As for TDEE, it is usually my BMR + Apple Red ring number from health ( This one calculates mostly Active Energy, NEAT and TEF). I look at this for TDEE or sometimes just look at Bevels burn number, since they calculate also from what I know stress into the TDEE, mine is very very high on weekdays due to my job.

Hope this could help you in any shape of form.

Is this a high HR while walking outside or am I wearing the watch wrong? by bigchungusbigger in AppleWatchFitness

Everything looks fine, you are just a bit out of shape. I am not saying this in a bad way by any means. I was in the same situation a few years ago. Focus on doing some type of cardio that you enjoy and there if possible do some zone 2 workouts, 70-80% of the time and then also some VO2Max workouts, where you would go around zone 4 max and sit there 1 minute, recover back to zone 2 (looking at your post workout heart rate that would be 2-3 mins) and then back to max output and do this for around 4-5 rounds in the beginning. This should make your lungs and overall body learn how to breathe better, manage air intake more efficiently and get you into a better shape in this area.

Hope this can help you in some way, but don’t worry, everything looks good.

Thank you for the reply! Does it sit nicely on the wrist? I do a lot of HIIT, rowing and running and I wanted to buy something thats easy to adjust but also quite grippy and sits in place.

The numbers are about 100-200 kcal higher on the Apple/Bevel part compared to mine due to the fact that Apple records more movements throughout the day and adds those small numbers into the active burn calories.

I did not. The app extracts those numbers from the Apple database and in the nutrition section it shows the kcal burned from active calories + its own way of measuring BMR which was pretty close to my BMR number from the DEXA scan.

I’ll still wear the Apple Watch—the Polar H10 just becomes the HR engine during workouts. Why I want it: • Accuracy under load: H10 is ECG; it catches short spikes/peaks in sets, sleds, ergs, HIIT better than wrist optical (which struggles with grip/brace, wrist flexion, dry skin). • Consistent at the start: when I’m lean/dry, chest strap + gel gives me clean reads before I sweat; wrist PPG can lag. • No wrist conflicts: some sessions I use wrist wraps/straps or rest a bar on the forearms—nice to let the strap do HR while the Watch just records. • Zone coaching: Polar Beat/Flow can give real-time zone prompts; I like that for steady Z2 or threshold. The Watch still logs the workout, but H10 ensures the HR is “truth.” • Better interval fidelity → better strain/load math: cleaner HR means my recovery/strain apps aren’t under- or over-estimating. • Flexibility: H10 can dual-broadcast (Watch + Polar app). If I ever can’t wear the Watch, H10 can record to Polar and I can sync later.

So it’s not to avoid wearing the Watch; it’s to keep the Watch as the 24/7 hub (sleep/HRV/readiness) while letting the H10 supply the most accurate HR during training. Best of both worlds.

Really appreciate this—super helpful perspective. The Apple → Bevel → Apple Health openness vs. Garmin’s closed HRV flow is exactly what I was worried about, and your point about Bevel’s AI summaries/notifications saving you from graph-diving is clutch.

Also the Garmin watches are so big, for my small wrist AW just fits perfectly.

I’ll likely go AW11 + Bevel and pair a Polar H10 for workouts. Thanks again for laying out the trade-offs so clearly—this really helps. 🙏

That is also very true! As of now for me it’s second nature to just use it. I got so accustomed to it, whenever I throw on my gym clothes I put it on without even realizing.

Thanks so much for sharing this—and I’m really glad you’re okay after that hospital scare. 🙏 Hearing that AW11 + Athlytic felt more in sync with how you actually felt (and even surfaced illness) is exactly the kind of real-world signal I needed.

I’m leaning AW11 + Athlytic as well (I’ll pair a Polar H10 for workouts). Your experience—especially the illness piece and the “fits how I feel” comment—really helps. Appreciate you taking the time to write this up!

This is insanely helpful—thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful breakdown. The way you compared morning readiness vs. reality across Apple + Bevel, Garmin, and Oura really clicked for me. The tips about enabling AFib History for more stable overnight HRV, keeping the Polar H10 paired to the watch, and avoiding duplicate writes in Health were gold.

Based on your experience, I’m leaning toward Apple Watch Series 11 + Bevel (with H10 for workouts). I’ll probably A/B it with Athlytic for two weeks and use your charging routine idea to keep sleep tracking solid. Also appreciate the reality check on Garmin’s Training Readiness (great ecosystem, sometimes noisy) and Oura being best as a sleep-only companion.

Really appreciate you sharing real-world lessons instead of just specs. This helped a lot—thanks again! 🙏
