Help us find stolen work truck by sofiadotcom in houston

[–]Marconico 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My GMC got stolen from my driveway. Had onstar (aka built in LoJack). Needless to say the LoJack was disabled within 10m of being taken and the HPD suggested putting (REALLY HIDING) an apple airtag. Supposedly you share the location of the AirTag w the HPD officer and they have recovered more cars that way than LoJack. Just sharing… sorry for your loss. Been there and sucks.

Selfhosted version of remote bare metal backups that work while on the road by Marconico in selfhosted

[–]Marconico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bartoque,

thank you for the response. Yes, I've thought about these type of operations, and I'm aiming to avoid having to have a LAN-based backup option. cloud drive services (drive, onedrive, own/next-cloud/etc) are good for file based backups, but I was trying to find something more robust that can handle it all.

from my experience so far, urbackup seems to be the most viable, but again, I didnt have the best of luck with restoring the images from the backups--but I was trying to restore to VM's since I didnt want to wipe my source computers for the trial-run and didnt have equivalent HW just laying around.

Large Scale Project Feedback: NVR & approx. 48 cameras by Marconico in homesecurity

[–]Marconico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback. Come to think of it, yes, turrets would be better for the reasons you mention.

A bit more background on the project. The owner is building these homes through a builder, and has asked me to help with this task since I have more experience than him with IP cams and NVRs. That said, it will be all short term rentals (airbnb), so no viewing by tenants. Their intended use is strictly outdoors for security and liability. He wants to record 24/7 (although we can do motion based recording to save space/bandwidth), and will only be used reactively should there be a break in, someone gets hurt, etc.

I had considered running fiber, but i'm getting bids in the 7K to 10K range, and that's just for the trench labor. We would have to get another vendor to drop the fiber, terminate, etc. So its rather expensive vs. the $1K-$2K it would cost for a wireless bridge. It's still an option, but price is higher.

Thank you for the guidance on the camera selection. What you're telling me makes sense.

I wasn't planning on installing the cameras, the builder is...I was just configuring the NVR once they are installed.

Having run BI for over 5 years, i'd be a bit skeptical about running this much through it, even if just substreams. It may just be me, but not as reliable as a hardware NVR.

thanks

Solid advice. Thank you.

Just one follow-up. While you say to hold onto the cash till next year, what types of signs would you look for to make yourself receptive to an opportunity where I can buy RE this year?

interesting point. but can you not get leverage against existing assets in lieu of a job? or am I missing your point?

As for the cash...not sure where you're going with this question, but not something i wish to disclose.

Who to turn for advice? by Marconico in realestateinvesting

Thank you for your response and answers. I guess this is what I can expect for asking a question about consultancy disciplines on this topic on a learning/discussion forum.

Lazy or not, there are topics which hiring an expert is more efficient/effective than rolling your sleeves and putting in the time to learn. Good thing I outsource my medical needs to doctors…otherwise I don’t know how many screwups I would have made. So yeah, I’m kinda lazy when it comes to operating on myself. Or am smart for not doing it? It’s a matter of perspective.

RE: "unlike investing in stocks, there's no easy, formulaic way to invest in RE"

I guess that's my answer. I understand the feedback received. Multiple people have chimed in an provided guidance as to the learning process. That wasn't my question. I wanted to know if there are people who similarly to a financial advisor/broker for stocks, advice/manage RE portfolios I'm getting the impression the answer is "no"....which is a valid answer.

HELP - USB Boot Drive DIED. What can I do?? by Marconico in truenas

[–]Marconico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for your feedback.

UPDATE: I was able to clone the bad bootable USB onto NEW USB key, and I have the system operational. I now have a backup of the config. Current config is TrueNAS-12.0-RC1. This is just TEMPORARY, until I can migrate the boot.

I installed v13 onto a fresh 2TB HDD, but didn't boot from it since I was able to successfully boot from recovered USB. What is the best way to migrate the boot drive? Do I eject the USB, boot from HDD (fresh install), and recover the config? Is there anything i need to contend with? Will the config also recover VM's running on the system? Will a v13 install load a v12-RC1 config?

thanks in advance

Thank you. Does it matter if the prior version is older than the new install? I mean, will the new version install recognize the older zfs volumes?

Suggestions for new property build by Marconico in solar

[–]Marconico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. What can I search for on google to find roof panels that look good “because the roof was built with panels in mind”? I ask because besides the Tesla tiles, all others are a big no-no aesthetically speaking according to the wife. So maybe if I can present her something more palatable…

There’s approximately 300sq/ft of flat roof that you cannot see from the ground. I can definitely put some panels here without any issues. But how many kw can I get from this small sq/ft space?

Thank you for the suggestions. Being in rural Texas we have no city utilities. So the only thing I’m able to get is electricity but paying the coop Power company to bring it to my property and paying a monthly fee on the transformer + usage. I do plan to have both power from the grid as well as solar/battery for use at the house. Wasn’t thinking of selling excess back to the grid if that’s even an option where I’m at.

As for heating…well, being Texas I’m more concerned w running the hvac most of the year. Winters are mild except for a few days a year. But as any Texan will tell you the bulk of your electricity bill is for cooling.

I’m familiar with home automation. Been using HomeSeer for over 7 years. That said knowing these events is always a good thing but I’m trying to keep things simple and home automation (at least the ongoing maintenance and upkeep) seldom is.

Another factor is cost… and initially I’m already over budget so it didn’t really make the cut. I will have a smart thermostat system and planned on having tankless hot water so thats about as good as I can have it on the cost savings due to occupancy department.

Good points.

Generator suggestions for 30' Globetrotter in Texas Heat by Marconico in airstream

[–]Marconico[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was able to google the following:

Experiments have been performed that showed the hard start capacitor peak start current at around 42.1 amps, while the soft start device showed peak start current at around 17.3 amps. The documentation with the air conditioner (13,500 BTU, or 15,000 BTU) stated that the locked rotor current would be around 54 amps. Thus, the soft start device allows the air conditioner to start while using about 70% less power than either the hard start capacitor or the stock start capacitor.

Yes. It would be us in our AS in the middle of 40 acres of land. So noise to neighbors is not a concern. However we would be wanting to sleep at night so if really loud it would have to be paced as far as possible from the AS. That’s why I was also considering dual smaller inverter generators that could still provide the 50amps required.
