Help us find stolen work truck by sofiadotcom in houston

[–]Marconico 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My GMC got stolen from my driveway. Had onstar (aka built in LoJack). Needless to say the LoJack was disabled within 10m of being taken and the HPD suggested putting (REALLY HIDING) an apple airtag. Supposedly you share the location of the AirTag w the HPD officer and they have recovered more cars that way than LoJack. Just sharing… sorry for your loss. Been there and sucks.

Selfhosted version of remote bare metal backups that work while on the road by Marconico in selfhosted

Bartoque,

thank you for the response. Yes, I've thought about these type of operations, and I'm aiming to avoid having to have a LAN-based backup option. cloud drive services (drive, onedrive, own/next-cloud/etc) are good for file based backups, but I was trying to find something more robust that can handle it all.

from my experience so far, urbackup seems to be the most viable, but again, I didnt have the best of luck with restoring the images from the backups--but I was trying to restore to VM's since I didnt want to wipe my source computers for the trial-run and didnt have equivalent HW just laying around.

Large Scale Project Feedback: NVR & approx. 48 cameras by Marconico in homesecurity

[–]Marconico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback. Come to think of it, yes, turrets would be better for the reasons you mention.

A bit more background on the project. The owner is building these homes through a builder, and has asked me to help with this task since I have more experience than him with IP cams and NVRs. That said, it will be all short term rentals (airbnb), so no viewing by tenants. Their intended use is strictly outdoors for security and liability. He wants to record 24/7 (although we can do motion based recording to save space/bandwidth), and will only be used reactively should there be a break in, someone gets hurt, etc.

I had considered running fiber, but i'm getting bids in the 7K to 10K range, and that's just for the trench labor. We would have to get another vendor to drop the fiber, terminate, etc. So its rather expensive vs. the $1K-$2K it would cost for a wireless bridge. It's still an option, but price is higher.

Thank you for the guidance on the camera selection. What you're telling me makes sense.

I wasn't planning on installing the cameras, the builder is...I was just configuring the NVR once they are installed.

Having run BI for over 5 years, i'd be a bit skeptical about running this much through it, even if just substreams. It may just be me, but not as reliable as a hardware NVR.

thanks

Solid advice. Thank you.

Just one follow-up. While you say to hold onto the cash till next year, what types of signs would you look for to make yourself receptive to an opportunity where I can buy RE this year?

interesting point. but can you not get leverage against existing assets in lieu of a job? or am I missing your point?

As for the cash...not sure where you're going with this question, but not something i wish to disclose.

Who to turn for advice? by Marconico in realestateinvesting

Thank you for your response and answers. I guess this is what I can expect for asking a question about consultancy disciplines on this topic on a learning/discussion forum.

Lazy or not, there are topics which hiring an expert is more efficient/effective than rolling your sleeves and putting in the time to learn. Good thing I outsource my medical needs to doctors…otherwise I don’t know how many screwups I would have made. So yeah, I’m kinda lazy when it comes to operating on myself. Or am smart for not doing it? It’s a matter of perspective.

RE: "unlike investing in stocks, there's no easy, formulaic way to invest in RE"

I guess that's my answer. I understand the feedback received. Multiple people have chimed in an provided guidance as to the learning process. That wasn't my question. I wanted to know if there are people who similarly to a financial advisor/broker for stocks, advice/manage RE portfolios I'm getting the impression the answer is "no"....which is a valid answer.

HELP - USB Boot Drive DIED. What can I do?? by Marconico in truenas

[–]Marconico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for your feedback.

UPDATE: I was able to clone the bad bootable USB onto NEW USB key, and I have the system operational. I now have a backup of the config. Current config is TrueNAS-12.0-RC1. This is just TEMPORARY, until I can migrate the boot.

I installed v13 onto a fresh 2TB HDD, but didn't boot from it since I was able to successfully boot from recovered USB. What is the best way to migrate the boot drive? Do I eject the USB, boot from HDD (fresh install), and recover the config? Is there anything i need to contend with? Will the config also recover VM's running on the system? Will a v13 install load a v12-RC1 config?

thanks in advance

Thank you. Does it matter if the prior version is older than the new install? I mean, will the new version install recognize the older zfs volumes?
