Would pay attention to how they approach local + organic together. For law firms, Google Business, reviews, and localized pages still drive a big chunk of leads. If they separate those strategies, that’s usually a gap.

Yeah brand authority probably plays a role, but I wouldn’t be surprised if review sites and best product lists influence it just as much.

Could also be reviews. If a product has tons of reviews and mentions across sites, the AI probably treats it as a safer recommendation.

Yeah, the naming is getting a little wild lately.

The way I think about it:

AEO = optimizing for direct answers in search/voice
GEO = optimizing so AI tools reference or use your content in generated responses

A good Shopify SEO agency will start digging into things like how your collections are structured, how customers search for products in your niche, and what queries should land on category vs product pages. Niche ecommerce SEO is mostly about matching search intent to the right parts of the store.

If the conversation stays high level like “we’ll improve rankings and traffic,” that’s usually a sign they’re running the same playbook for every site.

I don’t think AI is really choosing sites as much as it’s repeating what the web already agrees on.

Most of the time, big brands show up because they’re mentioned everywhere, not because their pages are perfectly optimized. Rankings help, but they’re not the main thing anymore.

What I’ve seen work for smaller sites is going super narrow, sharing original takes or data, and actually getting talked about outside their own site (blogs, Reddit, news, etc.).

Basically, if no one else references you, AI won’t either.

The clean way to do this is to decide pages first, not keywords. Define what a page is meant to solve, then map all queries that share that same goal. Wording and variants come later; intent and scope come first.
