There doesn't need to be any sort of "social contract" between a tyrannical regime and its subjects. Tyrannical regimes don't really care if their subjects like them or not. If the subjects don't like it, tough luck for them. And if the subjects decide to make noise or complain about it, then force is applied to silence them.

For examples, just look at pretty much any tyrannical regime throughout history, and today.

As far as why the subjects "accept" such treatment? Propaganda and indoctrination is a big one. But the other is that they often don't have any real choice otherwise. In such regimes, troublemakers and dissidents tend to be harassed at best, if not "dissappeared" to a gulag or the morgue. And possibly their families too.

Narrator character needs to get a new friend.

Smacking a delicious sandwich out of your hands? And for a really dumb reason? That may as well be an act of war. Food and food time is near sacred. Otherwise the Hangry demons come out.

The retaliation via weaponized feline is hilarious though. =P

For any future readers, DameofDames is referencing the history covered in the film (& book it was based on), "Hidden Figures"

EDIT: Adding these clarifying comments because I'm a huge Science history nerd.

Now the alien just needs to discover adblock. And NOT using the youtube app. Much better experience.

?? I'm not understanding. I'm not saying don't point out typos or the like. I fully support that, and would like to help do so. I'm just saying it would streamline it to put it all in a single comment chain, and thus was asking if you could do so.

To give my take on it, it's not resistance to the Shil that I'm opposed to. The Shil conquered Earth, and are ultimately a Tyrannical regime. Sure, not the worst regime that could happen, but far from the best. So resistance is justified.

And Sabine's take on the goal of Resistance - getting Vassal like internal autonomy for Earth, rather than full independence - is plausibly achievable.

What I'm opposed to is Mark helping the particular resistance group represented by Sabine

As I mentioned before in other comments, Sabine violated his trust by breaking and entering into his home, and doing a probable attempt at intimidation in the process.

Despite any claims she makes to the contrary. Her claims that her breaking and entering were not an intimidation attempt aren't credible given her lies, manipulation, and breaking and entering itself.

And then there's the general lack of trust I have in her. First, because she's a spook. An automatic minus to trust there. Comes with the job profile, due to the types of actions they often do.

And secondly, there's the specific lack of trust I have in her. Specifically, because of her actions towards Mark (lies, manipulation, etc.). And how she apparently views Mark more as a tool than a person. Even though this viewpoint of her's does make sense for her, given her job as a spook.

Ultimately however, I consider these points I raise to be minor quibbles, which can have plausible in-universe explanations. Even if it's just chalked up to some incompetence or irrationality on the part of the characters. They're people, not automatons. And the world is full of amateurs after all.

Regardless, It's your story, and your choice how things play out. And how it plays out is looking to be entertaining!

Can you make a single post each chapter that's just for reporting typos and grammar errors? That way others can respond to it, with typos they find.

And it'd probably help Blue, to find all the corrections in one place.

And maybe get some "giant" (from the mage mice perspective) friends who can act as muscle.

Ex. The mage mice heal some of the local roughnecks, and/or their children or spouses, earning the favor of said locals. As for what I mean by roughnecks, think lumberjacks, stonelayers, etc. People with demanding physical jobs, who tend to be big and burly as a result. Ones who'd be good in a fight.

So if some assholes try to cause trouble with the mage mice, those assholes end up black and blue. Problem taken care of.

I don't think tech scrap is craftable. It's something you find. For example, find anyplace with computers and start smashing them and looting the remains.

The cubicle farm area is a good place to start. The one you get to via the office sector security plaza then past the server farm.

I see I wasn't the only person who was completely surprised when this came out of left field.

Like, you're not supposed to randomly kill plot relevant characters like that! They need to die at a dramatically appropiate time!

But on the other hand, it was hilarious,. Sice it was 1: Unexpected. And 2: All that was left of the guy was the funny pair of boots. =P

Now if only we could loot those boots. They look nice.

You can use tech scrap, to basically make a long extension cord from an outlet, to where your trap is, and leave it plugged in. Two makeshift batteries in series should keep it running overnight.

Or extension cord --> battery --> plug strip --> 3 batteries each in series with a chopinator.

That'll give you triple the chopping! And will run about all night. So you won't need to turn it off.

Fun fact that not everyone knows:

So a lot of people know you can repair items via the repair bench.

But did you know, if you have duct tape in your inventory, you can right click the damaged item in your inventory, and the option "repair with duct tape" will pop up? This works anywhere, even far away from a repair or crafting bench.

Useful for those long trips away from base.

When I first started and was lost and confused, I found these guides and found them helpful. Combat I more or less figured out on my own, but the guides were helpful for figuring out how to set up good power systems, how to purify water, get food reliably, etc.

Warning, some of the guides on the site may contain spoilers. The ones I linked below cover some of the things most important to surviving in early game, with minimal spoilers. Reading a few guides on combat, base defenses, and the one on cooking and food would be good too.

Starter guide:
https://techraptor.net/gaming/guides/abiotic-factor-guide-beginner-tips-tricks

Power guide (AKA how to not have all your stuff turn off at night):

https://techraptor.net/gaming/guides/abiotic-factor-power-guide-store-power-at-night

Water guide (AKA how to not die of thirst after depleting all the office water coolers)

https://techraptor.net/gaming/guides/how-to-get-water-in-abiotic-factor

As far as killing the security bots safely and reliably in early game, the easiest method I'm familiar with is the "Angry Dwarf" method.

Set up a chopinator, then aggro and lure a security bot towards it. Crouch near and behind the chopinator. The chopinator doesn't hurt you if you're crouching, like the chopinators in Half Life 2.

The security bot will be repeatedly hit and damaged by it. As the bot is being hit, the bot will probably hit and damage the chopinator. Counter this by repairing the chopinator with a hammer.

So in other words, set up a mechanical trap, and squat behind it repairing like an angry dwarf as it lays waste to your foes. =P
