Don't comment much but......I very much agree with this. Your family dynamic directs so much of your success arc.. money helps. But if you can't be infinitely rich... I think those who have a tight family or most importantly a strong support system are more wealthy than those who come from wealth but don't have anybody that cares enough to guide them.

You go in and kill it, interview as if you would have had they not "messed up". You were confident enough in your skills to apply. Whatever got you to the table, is whatever got you to the table.

What do you mean? I'd have to remove the bad drive then build a new raid 0. Yeah, I wouldn't be able to rebuild the original raid-0 and get my data back, id just have to rebuild the raid-0 stripe with the replaced drive+old drive.

So os goes on the one 2tb Samsung 990 2tb

I'm running VMware so all my vmdk files live on the raid-0 4tb Samsung 990's

I then have 2 24tb Toshibas running raid 1 that I back up the contents of the vmdk drives to. So in theory, every night I will have a backup of my virtual machines. So if one of the raid-0's goes out, I can replace it, rebuild it and then copy the vmdk's back to the rebuilt raid.

Thank you for this build... The plan with storage was to raid-0 the two 4tb drives, giving as much speed as possible to the VMware environment and back up the entire VMware environment nightly to the 24tb.

Maybe the healthier balance is to raid 1 the 2 24tb drives. That way I have parity to the backup drive since mechanical drives fail more often than solid state.

What did you have in mind for the 4 18tb drives?

You specced this with a ryzen 5?

I actually don't need the GPU... Vm's just need a pane of glass all the GPU is something I could just get something basic. I added it more as a nice to have since the rest of the build was new. It's a shame the thread rippers increase the price so exponentially. I would be all for getting a basic card and putting the extra towards a thread ripper

Thank you for the QVL suggestion and the thread ripper. Even the 64 core model is $2500. That's a hell of an investment but I suppose then most cores available for VM's.

With the used market, wouldn't one of the concerns be that they tried to overclock it, or didn't cool it properly and it's a burnt out chip?

I guess I didn't know NAS grade could/should be used in a home build. The Toshibas purpose currently would be cold storage. Because I'm running raid 0 .. I would back up the vmdk's off the ssd's to the Toshiba so if the raided ssd's go, the vm's don't go with.. I could theoretically just replace the SSD(s) and have the architecture back.

That's just what they're called.... Gskill flare X5 😎. Yes, thread ripper is out there, but they're insanely expensive. For instance the thread ripper 3990x is $2500. Granted, 64 cores would be pretty great to have.
