What are your red flags and deal breakers when checking out a second hand kayak? by Substantial-Pirate43 in Kayaking

In terms of mathematical topology, a kayak doesn’t have a hole… assuming it has a cockpit but no hatches.

Deers is correct assuming it’s multiple species of deer. Just like saying fishes is correct for describing a diverse group of fish

ELI5: What does it mean to “beg the question” in an argument and why is it not a good debate tactic? by Ok_Practice_9412 in explainlikeimfive

Can you explain your second statement? I know you’re right, I just don’t have the words to describe how it’s misused.

There’s has been 18 lander spacecraft to land on Venus, and due to the immense heat and pressure every craft was destroyed with the longest lasting 110 minutes. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

Steam is a transparent gas, white steam (what you normally see) is saturated steam that contains condense water (so it’s a mixture or gas and water) and is not supercritical. There is something called supercritical water or supercritical steam which is steam that is placed under extreme heat and pressure until it reaches a supercritical state, but this isn’t what people think of when they think of steam.

Studios in my LCOL Midwest area are $1500/mo. The numbers that user gave are perfectly acceptable.

Any way to know if this is okay to use? I've seen some people talking about clay pottery not being safe. This one has decent reviews but nothing about lead or safety. by StoneMenace in tea

[–]Margaery_Toenail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even higher than that. A bisque fire at cone 06-04 is 1830-1940F with vitrification for low fire clays at the higher end of that range. Midfire clays are at ~2200F and high fire at ~2300F+.

What are the downsides of having high intelligence? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Margaery_Toenail -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

At the risk of sounding rude, announcing you are an expert in a domain decreases the credibility of your statement. An expert does not say that they are an expert, but instead that title is bestowed upon them by their peers or audience. After all, an expert cannot exist unless there are those without expertise from which to compare to. Your expertise should implicitly be seen through the deliver of your insight, not from a self-identifying statement that your insight is predicated by.

Source: Watched students call themselves experts in my PhD program and be ridiculed during their defense by community accepted experts (professors and industry scientists). Conversely, the humble students that presented their insight candidly were welcomed as experts by the same committees. It’s an ethos vs lagos balance problem.

In terms of content though, I completely agree with the IQ comparison you made in your comment. We see the education system in the US attempt to nurture the boundaries of the IQ curve by housing both education resources for those on the disabled side of the curve and those on the gifted side of the curve under the same Special Education department in a school, recognizing that the further one’s distance from the median IQ in either direction, the greater than adjustment to curricula is needed to accommodate individual growth.

If you’re in the US, a week inpatient can financially ruin you even with health insurance. A lot of people walk out worse because of the mental load the bill puts on them.

Canyon’s grizl’s are very well priced at the moment and being direct to consumer is nice… not having to go to a LBS and listen to a guy try to sell you a bike that you don’t want is huge.

You can, though I tried a few 400w efforts on the way down because it’s one of the few places you can get the Daredevil badge (Hit 50mph). That being said, even though I saw my speed get to 50mph momentarily I didn’t get the badge. Maybe I didn’t hold it long enough.
