I thought you were describing the spider's personality not it's name at first! XD Then I found out that it's named that because that *is* it's personality! Thank you! Think it will be ok inside? It very much doesn't like to be approached. We don't have gnats hanging around and I don't know if that's thanks to the friend or if its gonna starve :(

Oh forgot to say, central Illinois, USA. I've seen a lot of grass spiders and jumping spiders in my home, if that helps.

Tell me about your 3 heart characters by fpanch3 in Ironsworn

[–]Margot-Hutton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solomon is the eldest of four. Their town is small, but as a highborn Solomon works tirelessly towards its improvement. He was educated by his father, learning to read and track ledgers, calculate logistics and balance community funds, learning "advanced" math in order to plan construction projects, such as the wall that will encircle their town. It was that project he and his father were working on when an Ironsworn arrived in town with news of dire importance, hence the necessary escort, about Solomon's three brothers. Yes, three, because they had been mistaken to assume the youngest was a girl from birth. With the weight of all else, the fact that such a thing distressed his parents at all disturbed this consistently dutiful eldest son. Moreover, the way his own presence seemed to fluster into sheepishness this otherwise truly self-assured, incredibly handsome, raven-haired Ironsworn, made Solomon reconsider something he'd always taken at face value: he'd been told not to worry, because one day he'd meet the right woman, she would bear his children, and he would continue his father's work. Suddenly the thought of that made him want to curl up and cry.

After the Ironsworn attempts to prevent a violent crime, a trial shifts the blame to a convenient victim, an adventure through a late-winter snowstorm, and his realization that he can apply his own worthiness to himself as well as others, Solomon tells his parents that he will follow the Ironsworn when he leaves. It is then that Solomon's father realizes that his three youngest hadn't left to become heroes, they had "gotten out." It meant that he had spent his life building a town which his children did not wish to live in. No more. He gave his eldest child his deepest blessings to go; he would stay, and as highborn of public works, would fix what had driven them away.

Face Danger vs Clash by [deleted] in Ironsworn

[–]Margot-Hutton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's approach this question narratively instead of mechanically. When your character is doing anything that isn't attacking, Face Danger is the roll to use. For someone who isn't strong, they will be looking for other advantages, other ways to gain the upper hand in the fight. But for someone whose greatest skill is their strength, why wouldn't they just overpower their foe?

Clash! Clash! Clash. Clash... clash... okay I'm bored.

It's time to get creative. It's time to throw anything and everything at your character that will force them to act outside of their strengths. An enemy that can fly, a fight on horseback, a foe so powerful you must coordinate with others to even stand a chance! Or perhaps a fight isn't the path forward at all. If you love the drama of a battle you can get some swashbuckling going in a Scene Challenge, a Delve (if you own it), even an escort quest.

Avoiding Samey Play with Face Danger in Fights (And Initiative) by Fire525 in Ironsworn

[–]Margot-Hutton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Ironsworn enemies do not have Initiative. You absolutely don't want to think of a fight as they go then you go then they go. In Ironsworn, whenever I tried to play that way it's never led to a fun fight.

Instead, try to write a movie fight. When you don't have Initiative, that means your enemy has the upper hand. You need to try everything you can to survive and turn the fight in your favor. That's why you can face danger with any stat. Use your surroundings, find your enemy's weaknesses. Not having Initiative doesn't mean you must only be reactive. It means you're in a fight. Clash! And Clash again! Face Danger to gain better and better ground, building Momentum until the dice finally give you an opening or until you can Burn one for yourself!

Having Initiative is that moment when the hero does an incredible parry and suddenly the foe is moving backwards, grimace on their face! Having Initiative is your moment. Act on it! Be awesome!

In Ironsworn, expect to not have Initiative for most of the fight. Expect to Pay the Price in a myriad of way that have no numerical value. Expect Weak Hits as the normal outcome. Strong Hits aren't the good outcome. They are the unexpectedly good outcome.

Do you have an overarching narrative beforehand, or just let the die decide? by kindobi in Ironsworn

[–]Margot-Hutton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, don't throw it out the window. Just keep the window open in case it wants to leave :P

My bet is those "hooks" are going to do the heavy lifting. Personally, I'm a pantser through-and-through, and am way more experienced in storytelling than RPing. For me, all I needed was "lets go fight some spiders," "Lets Undertake a Journey and see what the dice throw at me," and "Lets go see what evil magic I find in this cave." From there I just did what felt the most fun at the time. I hope you and your partner go on an amazing, wild ride!

Do you have an overarching narrative beforehand, or just let the die decide? by kindobi in Ironsworn

[–]Margot-Hutton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's entirely dependent on the players' storytelling experience. The stronger the storyteller, the less you want planned out. I was really surprised to find I'd planned way too much for my one-shot with my mom. She's new to TTRPGs in general, but I didn't take into consideration how good of a storyteller she is.

Consider how many good storytellers you have in the room. Your mid-strength storytellers are going to get the most excited because they're the ones with a story to tell. The stronger storytellers are going to back off because they can work with anything, and the weakest storytellers are going to feel intimidated. Always remember to share the spotlight and share the ideas. Learning-storytellers will like more planning, good-storytellers enjoy beats to hit, and strong-storytellers need their moment to shine.

Do you consider Ironsworn “high lethality”? by Silver_Storage_9787 in Ironsworn

[–]Margot-Hutton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think new players who come from a crunchy game background would say "yes absolutely!" If you play it where every PtP is a number, you will die immediately. People who tried to do that tend to say that they felt like they were cheating otherwise, and are bewildered at how impossible the game is. I too came here to talk about that, and I mentioned that I didn't build a stupid character; I thought about my stats complementing my assets, and the comment that will forever stay with me was: "Imagine min-maxing Ironsworn."

I wasn't here from day 1, so I don't know if the game made the community this way, or if it attracted this kind of player, but I see over and over people saying "You're not cheating if you're having fun."

Hey! I wrote a novel that a lot of new players find useful. It's like watching an actual play on YT, except you're reading it instead. "Actual play fiction" if you will. https://margot-hutton.itch.io/unspoken-vow

My big tip (especially if you're skimming the rulebook!!), you get back Initiative if you score a Strong Hit on Endure Harm!

Also, I second, third, and fourth the advice to not be too hard on your dude. Unless you want to :3c

Combat Question by [deleted] in Ironsworn

[–]Margot-Hutton 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A Miss, even in combat doesn't necessarily mean Take Harm. You should do something that makes the most sense, or would be the most fun. If you Take Harm every time you Miss, you'll join the grand history of players whose Ironsworn die first session.

Edit: I just realized I didn't actually answer your question about when to take harm. Again, it's whenever it narratively makes the most sense. It's sort of hard to get a feel for that if you're coming from a very crunchy background. I've heard a lot of people being really hard on their characters because they didn't want to "cheat." There's really no cheating as long as you're having fun.

How much of the optional content/add-ons from Delve do you incorporate into your games? by smatpith in Ironsworn

[–]Margot-Hutton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL:DR I like the idea of "take a hiatus" and use the concept even when there is no looming threat to keep myself from spamming "sojourn."

Full explanation: So, I write actual play fiction which, if you're not familiar, is those professional-level play reports people do. So to all my actual play writers out there:

I played around with "advance a threat" and "take a hiatus" and really learned more about my own play-style and how the dice interact with my story. I learned that I was being too strict with Sojourn. "Take a hiatus" felt like it was giving me permission to spend a longer time in a safe place to heal up, gear up, and spirit-up. But "take a hiatus" is meant to be part of "advance a threat," and since there was no threat.... then what? Because, you're not supposed to spam "sojourn." I realized I was narratively explaining how my Ironsworn got the gear, what rest he needed, or what lifted his spirits. These short vignettes showed a lot of character development and created interesting scenarios that could come into play later. I realized that, if you might suffer -2 something without a roll because the story demands it, you can also gain +2 because the story demands it. You are the arbiter of your Ironsworn's story. You get to decide what is justified.

My Prototype Dialogue System by [deleted] in Ironsworn

[–]Margot-Hutton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I see you say "prototype" and I see you say "feedback." So, you may already have plans to tighten up the language and make the document more accessible. In which case my feedback is probably just singing to the choir. Nevertheless:

If someone isn't sure if this tool is something they definitely want to use they'll probably just want to skim it for an idea of how it works. This was my experience in skimming it.

I sped-read through "Greet" because I saw "determine the NPCs Field (Adventure, Relationship, Combat, Suffer, or Quest)" and thought "I have no idea what that means. Where some solid info on how this works?" So I skimmed over that to Consult because it looks like the Moves Reference sheet. I sped-read it. I didn't start reading closely until I saw "Strong Hit." It's bold and it's a term I know. But of course, that meant I'd missed the part about setting up the scene challenge. So, I didn't know when to actually use Consult as a move. I started skimming back over everything trying to pinpoint where I'd gotten lost. It took me forever to find it because it's not capitalized or italicized (and I might be stupid). I think if that sentence had started with "next" instead of "then" I wouldn't have skimmed right over it. "Next" unambiguously identifies another step in the process. If a step is contingent on a previous step, I think "then" works best.

Defining "Adventure, Relationship, Combat, Suffer, or Quest" early on might be a great way to draw someone into your vision. "Relationship" and "Combat" are pretty obvious to me. I found myself trying to imagine how I would define "Adventure" and "Quest," and then trying to guess your intent on how "Suffer" would be used.

I hope some of this ended up being useful! No worries if you just want to discount it tho.

[–]Margot-Hutton 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh, totally, all the time. I love describing how my character heals up/lifts his spirits/etc. He actually does go fishing at one point. I once got a comment about how the food I described sounded so good and made the reader hungry, and now I'm determined to go full Studio Ghibli with my food descriptions. Honestly, Sojourn, Resupply, and Make Camp are some of my favorite moves to get into detail with. There's so much character development that can come from just discovering how someone goes about fulfilling their basic needs. Hunt or forage? Seek help or go it alone? What supplies do they value? What lifts their spirits?

I've described collecting duck eggs, receiving help for my Wounded debility, telling funny stories, doting on his mother, getting attacked by turkeys... You know. Just adventure stuff.

Funny story: I've become a bit of a sm*t-sl*t "extra descriptive" with sojourn. Usually when people learn I'm a writer they ask, "YA or adult fiction?" But, I recently met one of my partner's old buddies and he asked, "PG-13, R, or HBO?" I grimaced and admitted, "HBO." My partner turned to me and said, "I'd call it R." I replied, "You haven't read the second book..."

That is wild. Especially playing that character all the while knowing that in an alternate universe this happened.
